  • Preventable or Not?
    2026/09/25

What makes a truck accident preventable or non-preventable? In trucking, being legally at fault and having a preventable accident aren't always the same thing.

In this episode of Driven Too Far: The Truth About Trucking, Andrew breaks down accident preventability and explains why professional truck drivers are expected to look beyond simply asking, “Whose fault was it?”

Through several real-world trucking safety scenarios, Andrew explores whether a driver could have reasonably done something differently to avoid an accident or incident.

The examples include an unsafe passing situation on a two-lane highway, being rear-ended at a stoplight, striking a fixed object while maneuvering, a flatbed load shift, merging traffic on an interstate and more.

Some situations may clearly be another driver's fault, but that doesn't always mean the incident was non-preventable. A professional driver may still have opportunities to slow down, create more space, stop a maneuver, move over or anticipate a developing hazard.

Andrew also discusses why defensive driving and personal accountability matter. The goal isn't simply assigning blame after an accident. It's understanding what could have been done differently so drivers can learn from the situation and prevent another incident in the future.

If you're a professional truck driver, safety manager or anyone interested in truck driver safety and preventable accidents, this episode offers a practical look at how accident preventability is evaluated in the trucking industry.

  • Why Your Last Lease Purchase Failed
    2026/09/24

Why do so many lease purchase trucking programs fail for drivers? Becoming a lease operator can be an exciting next step in a trucking career, but signing a truck lease without understanding the business behind it can quickly become expensive.

In this episode of Driven Too Far: The Truth About Trucking, Andrew breaks down six common reasons truck drivers struggle with lease purchase programs and what you should understand before signing your next lease.

One of the biggest mistakes is treating a lease operator settlement like a regular paycheck. As a lease operator, that money is business revenue, and expenses such as taxes, fuel, insurance, maintenance, truck payments and time off all have to be accounted for before you know what you're actually earning.

Andrew also explains the difference between revenue and profit, why maintenance history and truck age matter, and why you need to understand every part of a lease purchase agreement before signing it.

The episode also covers questions drivers should ask when evaluating a truck lease purchase program, including:

    • What expenses come out of my settlement?
    • What costs does the carrier cover?
    • Is there a maintenance escrow?
    • Can I review the truck's maintenance records?
    • What happens at the end of the lease?
    • Can I talk with drivers who have successfully completed the program?
    • What do successful lease operators actually earn?

Finally, Andrew explains why becoming a lease operator requires a shift from thinking like a company employee to thinking like a business owner. Having the right to refuse freight doesn't necessarily mean refusing loads is always the best business decision.

If you're considering a lease purchase trucking program, had a bad experience with a previous truck lease, or want to better understand what it takes to succeed as a lease operator, this episode can help you ask better questions before making the commitment.

  • Building Trust With Dispatch
    2026/09/24

How can truck drivers build trust with dispatch? Strong communication with your dispatcher or driver manager can have a bigger impact on your miles, loads and paycheck than you may realize.

In this episode of Driven Too Far: The Truth About Trucking, Andrew explains what happens behind the scenes in dispatch and why the relationship between a truck driver and driver manager matters.

The conversation starts with a common concern: a driver looks at their paycheck or miles and feels like something is off. Instead of sitting on the frustration or assuming dispatch is working against you, Andrew explains how asking the right questions can lead to a much better outcome.

One phrase he recommends is simple: “Help me understand.” Approaching a conversation with curiosity instead of accusations can help both the driver and dispatcher get to the facts faster and work toward a solution together.

Andrew also explains how drivers build what he calls a trust bank account with dispatch. Delivering on time, communicating consistently, managing hours of service, pre-planning and being ready for the next load all build trust over time.

That trust matters because not every load is assigned equally. Longer runs, tighter schedules and high-priority freight are often given to drivers dispatch knows they can count on.

On the other hand, poor communication, late deliveries and disrespectful interactions can make withdrawals from that trust account and affect a driver's reputation with the operations team.

If you're a professional truck driver looking to improve your relationship with dispatch, increase your miles or better understand how load assignments work, this episode offers practical advice for building stronger communication and trust.
