Hello and welcome back to the show. I'm so glad you're here today because we're going to talk about something that could literally save your life—or at the very least, save you from years of unnecessary complications and suffering.

Today's episode is inspired by a patient I saw in the clinic just recently. He came in with abnormal liver chemistry and what appeared to be a fatty liver on imaging. Now here's the kicker—his primary care physician had told him not to worry about it. Just watch it, they said. We'll keep an eye on it, they said.

But this patient knew better. He took initiative, sought a second opinion, and came to see me. And I applaud him for that.

Because as I've said time and time again—on this show, on social media, and to every patient who walks through my door—simply "watching" a lab abnormality or an abnormal scan is, in most cases, deleterious to your health.

We see it all the time. Physicians downplay subtle abnormalities found on diagnostic studies. They tell you everything's probably fine. They say we'll just monitor it. And what happens? These small problems become much larger, much more complicated, and much harder to treat.

Today, we're going to break down why "watching it" is not a credible health strategy, why you need to become an informed healthcare consumer, and what steps you should take when faced with abnormal test results.

We'll discuss why many chronic diseases don't show obvious symptoms early on, how those vague symptoms get mistaken for more common benign conditions, and how this creates a false sense of security that can be dangerous.

My message to you today is simple: Understand your abnormalities. Ask questions. Take action. And build a strong relationship with your healthcare team.

    Let's dive in.

  • Being an Engaged Patient
    2026/07/17
In this week's episode from our "Your Health First" radio program, Dr. Galati explores a topic that often goes unspoken in healthcare: the essential work required of patients, caretakers, and family members.

Being on the receiving end of medical care isn't a passive experience—it demands active participation and commitment. Dr. Galati emphasizes that whether you're a patient facing a diagnosis, a caretaker supporting a loved one, or a concerned family member, success in navigating the healthcare system requires dedication to learning and understanding the disease at hand.

The key to better health outcomes? Becoming an informed, empowered consumer rather than an idle observer. Dr. Galati discusses why patients and families must commit to truly understanding what's happening with their health, asking the right questions, and taking ownership of their care journey.

While committing to learning about a specific disease certainly takes time and effort, Dr. Galati explains why this investment is not only worthwhile but essential for achieving the best possible outcomes.

Tune in to learn how to transform from a passive participant into an active partner in your healthcare.

  • Longevity with Michale DelGiorno
    2026/07/16

This week I had my regularly schedule phone-in with syndicated radio host Michael DelGiorno. We discussed nutritional strategies for health as we age.

LONGEVITY AND NUTRITION: 7-NUTRIENTS TO PAY ATTENTION TO AS YOU AGE. DR. JOE GALATI EXPLAINS…

    1. Calcium

    • Why it’s needed: Keeps bones and teeth strong, helps muscles contract, and assists neurotransmitter release. As you age, the body leaches calcium from bones if you don't consume enough.
    • Best Sources: Dairy (yogurt, cheese, milk), canned salmon/sardines with bones, kale, chia seeds, and fortified plant milks.

    2. Vitamin D

    • Why it’s needed: Promotes calcium absorption and supports immune and brain health. Seniors often spend more time indoors and their skin becomes less efficient at producing Vitamin D from sunlight.
    • Best Sources: Fatty fish (salmon, trout), egg yolks, and fortified foods like orange juice and cereals.

    3. Vitamin B6

    • Why it’s needed: Vital for metabolism and brain health. Older bodies break down B6 more quickly and absorb it less efficiently.
    • Best Sources: Chickpeas (one cup provides over half the daily goal), chicken breast, bananas, and potatoes.

    4. Vitamin B12

    • Why it’s needed: Essential for the nervous system and red blood cell production. Roughly 10-30% of seniors have trouble absorbing B12 from food, often due to lower stomach acid or medications (like Metformin).
    • Best Sources: Beef, seafood, and eggs. Experts recommend seniors get at least half their B12 from fortified foods (like nutritional yeast or cereals) because they are easier to absorb.

    5. Protein

    • Why it’s needed: To blunt sarcopenia(the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength). Nearly one-third of seniors do not eat enough protein.
    • Requirements: Aim for 0.45 to 0.54 grams per pound of body weight (approx. 68–81g for a 150lb person).
    • Best Sources: Greek yogurt, eggs, beans, tofu, and lean meats.

    6. Fiber

    • Why it’s needed: To prevent constipation and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Most seniors fall well short of the recommended intake.
    • Requirements: Men (51+) need 30g; Women (51+) need 21g daily.
    • Best Sources: Lentils, whole grains, berries, and leafy greens.

    7. Total Calories (Energy Intake)

    • Why it’s needed: Appetite often declines with age, leading to unintended weight loss and weakness.
    • The Approach: If appetite is low, focus on nutrient-dense, high-calorie foods rather than large volumes of food.
    • Best Strategy: Use healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, peanut butter, and full-fat dairy, or drink smoothies with protein powder to ensure energy needs are met.
