概要

Ever walked upstairs and completely forgotten why? Or started a two-hour project that somehow turned into a three-week side quest? Welcome to Don't Lose Sight of the Squirrel, the podcast dedicated to the hilarious, frustrating, and highly relatable art of getting completely distracted. Hosted by Mark, this show is a lighthearted look at our universal tendency to lose focus on our main goals—our "squirrel." Whether it's tumbling down a digital rabbit hole, battling with high-tech tools that lead you down blind alleys, or turning a simple task into an endlessly complicated "Side Project," Mark explores the twists and turns of our everyday deviations. Expect candid storytelling, a healthy dose of self-deprecation, and an open invitation for you, the listener, to call in and share your own amusing stories of going completely off-script. If you've ever set out to do one simple thing and ended up somewhere entirely different... you're in the right place. Just try not to get distracted while you listen!Copyright 2026 Mark Sweet 社会科学

  • The Podcasting Paradox (All Gear, No Ideas)
    2026/03/12

I started this podcast thinking the production process would be the ultimate hurdle. I assumed that once I mastered the Shure microphone, the RØDECaster, and the steep learning curve of DaVinci Resolve Studio, I’d immediately get bored and move on to the next hobby.

Instead, I have hit a completely different wall: the terrifying blank page. In this episode, I explore the irony of building a high-tech broadcasting setup only to realise that mastering the gear is easy, but finding something to talk about every week is the real challenge. I also discuss my endless rabbit holes into audio editing, my suspicions of being tone-deaf, and whether this will be my penultimate episode.

  • Bouncing Signals and Bouncing Hobbies (Amateur Radio)
    2026/03/06

We hit 16 downloads last week! The fame obviously went straight to my head, so naturally, my brain got bored and I almost quit to start a gardening podcast.

Instead, I forced myself back into my 2x2 meter repurposed box room to talk about my longest-running, on-again-off-again obsession: Amateur Radio. Join me as we trace the journey from illegal 70s CB radios to bouncing digital signals off geostationary satellites over Central Africa. We’ll explore why mastering the learning curve and buying thousands of pounds of gear is always more appealing to me than actually talking to the bloke on the other end of the microphone.

Get Involved: What is your version of the "dusty camera"? What hobby did you spend a fortune on, only to realize you enjoyed the learning and the shopping more than the actual activity? Confess your expensive, unused mistakes to me at: the.squirrel@btinternet.com

  • All the Gear and No Idea: A 46-Year Photography Distraction
    2026/02/28

Welcome back to Don't Lose Sight of the Squirrel! After last week's video editing detour, host Mark takes us back 46 years to explore his longest-running distraction: the theory of photography. In this episode, Mark gets candid about the stark difference between being a genuinely creative amateur photographer and being a "professional camera owner" who misguidedly buys gear hoping it will fix poorly conceived images. (Spoiler alert: Mark cheerfully admits to being the latter!)
