I remember realizing I was in the pit of addiction when I couldn’t leave the house without planning a stop to grab a few shooters at the gas station before I got home. Or Making up reasons to go to the grocery store just to make a un-necessary food purchase to bury a bottle of booze or wine in my cart and Stashing “back up bottles” around the house.. Only to wake up in the middle of the night, parched with a glass filled with vodka disguised as water on my night stand to quench my thirst so I could get through the next few hours without getting sick… Just to get hit with another devastating hangover that left me with debilitating heart burn, bloating, vomiting and shaking so bad that I couldn’t write an email, send a text or complete sentence without stammering over words… all while coming up with reasons in my head that every person in the world was against me and I was the “victim” Looking back at the way addiction stained my days and nights, stole time from me, my wife, and my kids left me embarrassed and ashamed. Because of this, I struggled with the pit of mental health issues in some of the darkest ways imaginable. But I fought my way out. With the help of community resources, life changing coaches, mentors, pastors and raw will power. Since then, I’ve embarked on an unbreakable journey into sobriety and life that has changed in some the greatest ways imaginable. There is not one goal I have set for myself that I haven’t had the confidence to go after, most which I’ve achieved. Today I feel great when I wake up in the morning, I’m productive with my work, my 40 year old body feels great, I’m present with my family and friends, I sleep through the night, I don’t have the fear of dying from my disease, I no longer doubt my value to my family and I know I have a meaningful future! My mission here is to share the resources that worked for me, with you! In the form of candid interviews and conversations around journeys into sobriety. Jason’s life is a raw reflection of brokenness, rebellion, incarceration, relapse, forgiveness, and divine restoration. • Making Jesus Known: Missions, Miracles, And Family With David Ursin
    2025/09/15

In this moving episode of Domestic Dad: Cleaning Up the Mess, Nick sits down with evangelist David Ursin to unpack a life shaped by faith, tested by trials, and transformed by grace.

David grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of a Methodist pastor, learning early what it meant to be a “PK.” Yet despite being surrounded by church, he admits he lived in a lukewarm faith—outwardly devoted, but inwardly unsure what true surrender looked like. That all changed at 19, when a simple trip to Memphis opened his eyes to believers on fire for Jesus. In that airport, he made the decision to give God everything—and he never looked back.

David shares how fasting, Bible college, and unexpected mentorship under evangelism legends Reinhard Bonnke and Daniel Kolenda propelled him into global ministry. From learning the foundations of scripture to organizing gospel crusades for tens of thousands in Pakistan and India, David opens up about the miracles, the challenges, and the very real risks that come with preaching in hostile environments—including persecution, terrorist threats, and even moments of radical conversion among those once opposed to the gospel.

But this isn’t just a story of global missions—it’s also one of family. David reflects on meeting his wife Natalia, a widowed mother of two whose husband was tragically murdered. He shares how her radical act of forgiveness just one week after the killing became one of the clearest pictures of Christ he has ever seen. Together, David and Natalia built a family rooted in redemption: he legally adopted her twins earlier this year, giving them his name as their father, and they recently welcomed their first biological daughter, Evangelina, whose birth carries a powerful tie to Romans 1:16.

Throughout the conversation, David and Nick dive deep into themes of faith, forgiveness, and fatherhood. They talk about the challenges of blended families, the responsibility of spiritual leadership in the home, and why spending daily time with Jesus is the only way to lead with strength.

This episode is both inspiring and practical—a reminder that faith isn’t passive, it’s a verb. Whether you’re wrestling with forgiveness, searching for direction, or simply navigating the everyday chaos of parenting, David’s story will encourage you to trust God with everything.

  • Trust God Bro: Jordan Finger AKA Jay The Barber's Road to Restoration
    2025/08/25
In one of the most powerful testimonies ever shared on Domestic Dad: Cleaning Up the Mess, Nick Barnett sits down with Jay—a father, barber, and man radically transformed by the grace of God—to tell a story that is nothing short of miraculous. Jay’s journey begins in the thick of childhood instability and relational chaos, navigating life without the tools or truth he desperately needed. Like many men, he sought identity in all the wrong places: the streets, lust, broken relationships, and worldly validation. But the enemy’s lies only led him deeper into confusion, shame, and emotional devastation. A custody battle, trust issues, and even suicidal thoughts drove Jay to the edge. But it was in the dirt, in the very place he thought was his lowest point, that God began to move. With unmatched vulnerability and boldness, Jay recounts the moment he gave his life to Christ—how God didn’t wait for him to be perfect, polished, or prepared. He met Jay right where he was: in the pain, in the questions, in the mess. This episode is a front-row seat to the supernatural transformation of a man who learned that true healing comes through surrender, obedience, and intimacy with the Father. Jay speaks about the holy impact of his baptism, the way daily devotion is reshaping his mind, and how God is now using his barbershop as sacred ground for ministry—turning haircuts into holy encounters. What you’ll hear is not self-help. It’s not behavior modification. It’s regeneration through the Holy Spirit. Jay’s story is a testimony to the living God who still raises the dead, breaks chains, and plants seeds in dirt to bear fruit for generations. If you’ve ever wondered whether God could use your mess for His glory—this episode will leave no doubt. God is still in the business of resurrection. And Jay is living proof. Episode Timeline Highlights •00:46 Childhood & Chaos: Where the cracks began •14:32 Teenage Years & the Streets: Looking for identity •22:40 Barbering: A craft becomes a calling •34:46 Rock Bottom: The night suicide felt like the only option •35:58 The Gym & Brotherhood: God begins to pursue Jay •47:58 Baptism & Bold Faith: Publicly choosing Christ •54:47 Godly Friendship: The importance of spiritual community •01:07:41 “The Fence” Story: The cost of sitting in the middle •01:10:44 Creating a God-Centered Space: Turning the barbershop into a ministry •01:14:48 Discipling His Children: Fathering with eternity in mind •01:22:49 What He Wants to Be Remembered For: A holy man of God Key Spiritual Themes •God meets us in the dirt—not when we’re clean, but when we’re surrendered •The false promise of lust and the redemptive power of purity •Baptism as a public declaration of spiritual death and rebirth •The power of daily obedience and devotional discipline •Barbershop as sanctuary: bringing ministry into the marketplace •Discipling your children toward Heaven—not success, but salvation •Why you don’t have to be perfect to be used by God •The truth that every man is either on the narrow path or the wide one—there is no fence This episode isn’t just about Jay. It’s about what God can do with any man—any father—who is willing to lay down pride, pick up the cross, and walk in faith, no matter how dirty the path once was. Tune in and be reminded: You are never too far gone. You are never too dirty. And you are never beyond the reach of the redeeming love of Jesus Christ.
