Does refusing unfamiliar foods tell us something about a preschooler's cognitive development? This episode examines a new longitudinal finding and explains why predicting later performance is not the same as causing cognitive harm. Following 113 French preschoolers across a school year, Damien Foinant and colleagues investigated food neophobia, food categorization, and executive functions. We cover three questions: how large the reported associations were; what earlier studies do—and do not—replicate; and whether temperament, shared environments, or differences in learning experiences could explain the pattern. The children were approximately four years old at the first assessment. The central limitation is causal: two observational assessments cannot establish that changing food avoidance would change a child's cognitive trajectory. Attrition and uncertain generalizability add further qualifications. For source transparency, the episode uses the published abstract and lay summary alongside a matching 2025 conference report; the final journal full text was not accessible, and the earlier report is not counted as independent replication. This is an analysis of picky eating research, not a feeding program or an intelligence forecast. When does an everyday behavior reveal something about development—and when does a headline turn that clue into an unsupported warning?
