Do perfectionist parents cause teen social anxiety, or can anxiety also change how parents interpret their teenager's behavior? This episode examines a new longitudinal finding and separates evidence of prediction from claims about causes and treatment. The anchor study followed 2,228 Chinese adolescents, averaging roughly 13 at baseline, through five assessments over three years. We examine three questions: what reciprocal associations between parental negative attribution and anxiety establish; why comparisons within families differ from comparisons between families; and whether gender-specific pathways justify different conclusions for daughters and sons. The episode also places the finding alongside a large parenting–social anxiety meta-analysis and a preregistered Dutch study in which adolescent anxiety predicted later parenting changes more clearly than parenting predicted later anxiety. The central limitation is causal: longitudinal modeling does not randomly assign family experiences. We also examine possible cohort overlap and a news report's leap toward attribution retraining. When research identifies a possible family feedback process, how much of the resulting parenting message has actually been tested?
