Purpose isn’t a luxury topic, it’s a performance topic. When you’re a driven athlete or a high-achiever, you can train hard, work hard, and still feel oddly flat if you don’t know why you’re doing any of it. So I’m bringing you a philosophy hour that hit me like an epiphany: Ikigai, the Japanese concept of a “reason for being,” and how it connects to fulfillment, identity, and the way we serve our community through our work.
We break Ikigai down into a simple Venn diagram you can actually use: what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for. When those overlap, your vocation gets clearer. We also talk through what it feels like when you’re missing one circle, like being comfortable but empty, or fulfilled but unable to make it sustainable. Then I share the three stonemasons story, because it nails the real point: the same task can feel meaningless or monumental depending on the perspective you choose.
From there we sprinkle in Stoicism as a daily tool for emotional management and better decision making. You’ll hear the “dichotomy of control,” a practical way to handle stress in the moment, and the Serenity Prayer that helps me accept what I can’t change while taking action on what I can. We close with how this mindset shows up in my clinical work helping people get out of pain and back to the activities they love.
If you want more clarity, more peace, and a stronger sense of direction, hit play, then share this with a friend who’s been feeling stuck. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell me: which of the four Ikigai circles needs the most work for you right now?
