    Doing "God Stuff" Again

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Jonah 3:1-10 NIV

    __________

    Jonah 3:1-10 NIV

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it.4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone callurgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

    Acts 17:25 NIV

25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

    2 Chronicles 16:9 NIV

9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”

    Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

    Matthew 7:22-24 NIV

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

    Matthew 7:16-18 NIV

16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

    Luke 6:45 NIV

45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

    James 2:14 NIV

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

    1) GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE

    Jonah 3:1 NIV

    Romans 9:22-23 NIV

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory—

    Psalm 103:12 NIV

as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

    2) IDENTIFY THE STEPS

    Jonah 3:1-2 NIV

    3) TAKE SMALL BITES

    Jonah 3:3 NIV

    1 John 5:3 NIV

3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

    4) TRUST THE REST

    Jonah 3:10 NIV

    Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

    5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

    Talking to God Again

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Jonah 2:1-10 NIV

    __________

    Genesis 3:8-10 NIV

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

    Jonah 1:1 NIV

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:

    Jonah 1:3 NIV

3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord...

    Jonah 1:5 NIV

5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

    Jonah 1:12 NIV

12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

    Jonah 2:1-10 NIV

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.

2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.

3 You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
    all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.

    4 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
    yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’

5 The engulfing waters threatened me,
    the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.

    6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
    But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

8 “Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.

9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

    Matthew 11:28 NIV

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

    1) DON'T WAIT FOR PERFECT CIRCUMSTANCES

    Jonah 2:1-2 NIV

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

    Ecclesiastes 11:4 NIV

4 If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.

    2) DON'T WAIT FOR THE PERFECT WORDS

    Jonah 2:3-4 NIV

3 You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
    all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.

    4 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
    yet I will look again

    3) TAKE SIMPLE FIRST STEPS

    Jonah 2:7 NIV

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

    4) KEEP IT UP

    Jonah 2:9 NIV

9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.

    Pain: An Unwanted Gift

    Bobby Humes

    Today's Scripture: Jonah 1:17 ESV

    __________

    Jonah 1:17 ESV

And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

    John 16:33 ESV

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

    Isaiah 42:3 ESV

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

    Romans 8:18-19 ESV

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

    Romans 8:28 ESV

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

    1 Peter 1:6-7 ESV

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

    James 1:2-4 ESV

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

    Philippians 4:5-7 ESV

Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    1) PRAYER

    Luke 11:2-4 ESV

And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.

    Luke 22:40 ESV

And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.

    2) HUMILITY

    Psalm 25:4-5 ESV

Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.

    3) THANKSGIVING

    1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

    Jonah 1:17 ESV

And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.” 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. DREAM

    God's Dream

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Joel 2:32 NLT

    __________

    Joel 2:16 NLT

Gather all the people — the elders, the children, and even the babies.

    1 John 4:8 NLT

    …for God is love.

    2 Peter 3:9 NIV

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

    Genesis 12:2-3 NIV

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

    Revelation 7:9 NIV

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

    Joel 2:32 NLT

But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the Lord has said. These will be among the survivors whom the Lord has called.

    John 3:16 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    Matthew 16:18-19 NIV

18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

    Luke 14:23-24 NIV

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

    1) TRADE SKEPTICISM FOR SYMPATHY

    Matthew 23:37 NIV

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

    2) TURN COMPLAINING INTO PETITIONING

    1 Timothy 2:8 MSG

Since prayer is at the bottom of all this, what I want mostly is for men to pray—not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God.

    3) TRANSFORM INTERRUPTION TO INVESTMENT

    John 5:17 NIV

17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”

    John 14:12 NIV

12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

    Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

    Joel 2:32 NLT

But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the Lord has said. These will be among the survivors whom the Lord has called.

Proverbs 29:19 NIV Genesis 1:28 NLT John 10:10 NIV Ephesians 2:10 NIV Mark 4:19 NIV Proverbs 13:12 ESV Joel 1:2-20 NLTHear this, you leaders of the people.Listen, all who live in the land.In all your history, has anything like this happened before? 3 Tell your children about it in the years to come, and let your children tell their children.Pass the story down from generation to generation.4 After the cutting locusts finished eating the crops, the swarming locusts took what was left! After them came the hopping locusts, and then the stripping locusts, too! 5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep!Wail, all you wine-drinkers!All the grapes are ruined, and all your sweet wine is gone. 6 A vast army of locusts has invaded my land,a terrible army too numerous to count. Its teeth are like lions’ teeth, its fangs like those of a lioness. 7 It has destroyed my grapevinesand ruined my fig trees, stripping their bark and destroying it,leaving the branches white and bare. 8 Weep like a bride dressed in black, mourning the death of her husband. 9 For there is no grain or wineto offer at the Temple of the Lord.So the priests are in mourning. The ministers of the Lord are weeping. 10 The fields are ruined, the land is stripped bare. The grain is destroyed, the grapes have shriveled, and the olive oil is gone. 11 Despair, all you farmers!Wail, all you vine growers!Weep, because the wheat and barley—all the crops of the field—are ruined. 12 The grapevines have dried up,and the fig trees have withered. The pomegranate trees, palm trees, and apple trees—all the fruit trees—have dried up.And the people’s joy has dried up with them. 13 Dress yourselves in burlap and weep, you priests!Wail, you who serve before the altar!Come, spend the night in burlap, you ministers of my God.For there is no grain or wineto offer at the Temple of your God. 14 Announce a time of fasting;call the people together for a solemn meeting.Bring the leadersand all the people of the landinto the Temple of the Lord your God,and cry out to him there. 15 The day of the Lord is near, the day when destruction comes from the Almighty. How terrible that day will be! 16 Our food disappears before our very eyes.No joyful celebrations are held in the house of our God. 17 The seeds die in the parched ground, and the grain crops fail. The barns stand empty, and granaries are abandoned. 18 How the animals moan with hunger! The herds of cattle wander about confused, because they have no pasture. The flocks of sheep and goats bleat in misery. 19 Lord, help us!The fire has consumed the wilderness pastures, and flames have burned up all the trees. 20 Even the wild animals cry out to youbecause the streams have dried up,and fire has consumed the wilderness pastures. 1) LISTEN TO THE WHISPERJoel 1:2-3 NLT Revelation 3:20 NLT 2) LET YOURSELF LONG AGAINJoel 1:8-9 NLT Psalm 42:11 ESV Philippians 1:6 ESV 3) LOOK TO THE GIVER OF DREAMSJoel 2:13-14 NLT Psalm 86:7 NLT Matthew 11:28 ESV 2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. - T.E.
