    Sojourners: Our Eternal Hope

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV

    Hebrews 11:13-16 NIV

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

    Hebrews 11:9 ASV

9 By faith he became a sojourner in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

    Hebrews 11:10 NIV

10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

    Hebrews 9:15 NIV

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

    1) SOJOURNERS HAVE A CERTAIN HOPE

    Hebrews 11:1 NIV

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

    1 Corinthians 15:18-20 NIV

18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

    John 14:2 NIV

2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

    John 14:3 NIV

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

    Philippians 1:21 NIV

21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

    2) SOJOURNERS COURAGEOUSLY SERVE

    Hebrews 11:13 NIV

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died…

    John 13:3-4 NIV

3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 *got up from supper and *laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself.

    Colossians 3:23-24

23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

    Matthew 25:21 NIV

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

    3) SOJOURNERS BRING OTHERS TOO!

    John 14:6 NIV

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    Acts 1:8 NIV

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

    4) SOJOURNERS ENDURE

    Hebrews 13:14 NIV

14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

    Hebrews 12:2-3 NASB

2 looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

John 10:30 NIV30 I and the Father are one. Genesis 1:26 NIV26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” Genesis 2:18 NIV18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone…” Genesis 28:3 NIV3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. John 17:20-23 NIV20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 1 John 4:20-21 NIV20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. Matthew 16:18 NIV18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 1) WE MAKE SPACEHebrews 10:25 NIV25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Matthew 6:33 NIV33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 2) WE TAKE RISKHebrews 10:24-25 NIV24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. 1 Corinthians 12:25-27 NIV25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. Galatians 6:2 NIV2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3) WE TAKE OWNERSHIPHebrews 10:24 NIV24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Romans 12:5 NIV5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 4) WE CREATE ROOM FOR MORELuke 14:23 NIV23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. Matthew 16:19 NIV19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Mark 12:33 NIV33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

REAL ID: Discovering the God-made Masterpiece You Really AreMetanoia MindsetJon FredricksToday's Scripture: Hebrews 6:9-12 NIV Hebrews 5:11-14 NIV11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 6:1-12 NIVTherefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. Matthew 5:48 NIVBe perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. John 15:16 NIVYou did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. Romans 12:2 NIVDo not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Hebrews 6:1 NIV 2 Peter 3:9 NIV9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Luke 9:23 NIVThen he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 1) THE PRACTICE OF CONFESSION2 Corinthians 7:10 NIV10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. Luke 18:13 NIV13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 1 John 1:9 NIVIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 2) THE DISCIPLINE OF COMMUNITY2 Corinthians 6:17 NIVTherefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” Galatians 6:2 NIV Ecclesiastes 4:10 NIV 3) DRINK DEEPLY OF HIS WORDRomans 12:2 NIV Joshua 1:8 NIV 4) PRAYERPsalm 139:23-24 NIV 5) LEAN INTO LOVEColossians 3:14 NIV 1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV John 13:34 NIV

    Today's Scripture: Hebrews 4:14-16 NIV

    Hebrews 4:14-16 NIV

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priestwho has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priestwho is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

    Romans 8:1-2 NIV

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

    2 Peter 1:5-11 NIV

5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control;and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    Romans 12:2 NIV

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

    1) CHRIST CONNECTS

    John 3:16-18 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

    1 John 3:2-3 NIV

2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

    2) THE SPIRIT SHIFTS

    John 14:26-27 NIV

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

    3) PRIVILEGE PRINCESSES AND PRINCES

    Hebrews 4:16 NIV

16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

    1 John 5:14 NIV

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

    Ephesians 3:12 NIV

12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

    4) LAND

    John 15:5-7 NIV

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

    Romans 6:23 NIV

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

REAL ID: Discovering the God-made Masterpiece You Really AreResponsibleJon FredricksToday's Scripture: Hebrews 3:7-15 NIV Hebrews 2:1-4 NIVWe must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Romans 3:23 NIVfor all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Hebrews 4:13 NIV13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 9:27 NIV27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 2 Corinthians 5:10 NIV10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. Hebrews 3:7-15 NIV7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:“Today, if you hear his voice,8 do not harden your heartsas you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness,9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,though for forty years they saw what I did.10 That is why I was angry with that generation;I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’11 So I declared on oath in my anger,‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. 15 As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” 1) SOFTEN TO THE WONDERHebrews 3:8 NIVdo not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, Ephesians 4:18 NIV18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Proverbs 28:14 NIV14 Blessed is the one who always trembles before God, but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble. 2) SEEK GOD'S DESIGNHebrews 3:10 NIV10 That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ Hebrews 2:1 NIVWe must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. Micah 6:8 NIV8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Isaiah 48:17 NIV17 This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. Proverbs 8:17 NIV17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. 3) SURRENDER TO HIS SALVATIONHebrews 3:12-14 NIV12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. Luke 5:31-32 NIV31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, Hebrews 2:5-9 NIV5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Psalm 8:1-9 NIVLord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.2 Through the praise of children and infantsyou have established a stronghold against your enemies,to silence the foe and the avenger.3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?5 You have made them a little lower than the angelsand crowned them with glory and honor.6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;you put everything under their feet:7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild,8 the birds in the sky,and the fish in the sea,all that swim the paths of the seas.9 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Genesis 1:27 NIV27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 1) I AM DESIGNED FOR DOMINIONHebrews 2:8 NIV Psalm 139:14 NIV14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 17:8 NIV8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2) MY DESTINY FEELS HOPELESSLY DISTANTHebrews 2:8 NIV Genesis 3:17-19 NIV17 “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Isaiah 64:6 NIV6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. Romans 6:23 NIV 3) I AM DELIVERED FROM DEATHHebrews 2:14-15 NIV14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Romans 7:24-25 NIV24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 5:6-8 NIV6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. WORK: A Theology of the Gift of WorkWork to BlessJon FredricksToday's Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8:1-12 NIV Proverbs 18:16 NIV16 A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great. Acts 20:35 NIV35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Luke 6:27-31 NIV27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. Matthew 6:19 NIV Matthew 6:20 NIV 2 Corinthians 8:1-12 NIVAnd now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6 So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.10 And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. 1) IDENTIFY IF YOU WANT TO GIVE2 Corinthians 8:8-9 NIV 2 Corinthians 8:5 NIV 2) IDENTIFY WHAT YOU HAVE TO GIVE2 Corinthians 8:12 NIV Mark 12:41-44 NIV41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” 2 Corinthians 9:8-11 NIV8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;their righteousness endures forever.”10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 3) MAKE A PRAYER-FILLED PLAN2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV 4) STRETCH IT OUT2 Corinthians 8:10-11 NIV 2 Corinthians 8:7 NIV Mark 10:28-31 NIV

Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Ephesians 1:3 NIV3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. James 1:17 NIV17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Romans 10:12 NIV12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, Genesis 1:22 NIV22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 NIV 1) BE FAITHFUL TO WORK2 Corinthians 9:10 NIV Ephesians 2:10 NIV10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
