The 30-Day Blueprint to Your First Paying Customer

Are you stuck in "productive procrastination," spending weeks on a logo or a website instead of actually making money? In this episode of Diary of Cliches, Kay Jay breaks down the clinical, data-driven framework for launching a business in exactly 30 days.

Drawing from her book, How To Start A Small Business That Actually Makes Money - Book 1 of the How to miniseries, Kay Jay shares the personal stories behind her own career change. After a sudden corporate job loss erased her ten-year plan as a senior engineer, she found herself in the "messy middle"—once even trying to pivot into an artisanal candle business that left her "inhaling fragrance oils" while her savings bled dry.

Through that experience, she engineered a "blueprint forged from the literal wreckage" of her career to help others avoid the same life choices that lead to failure.

    In this episode, we explore:

The Minimum Viable Business (MVB): Why you don't need a brand to have a business. Learn the only three things you actually need to launch: a clear offer, a specific price, and a way for customers to reach you.

The Three-Layer Acquisition Strategy: A tactical guide to overcoming challenges in finding your first ten customers. We move from your immediate network to local community channels like Nextdoor, and finally into targeted outreach.

Pricing Psychology: The life advice every new founder needs to hear—why underpricing is a "signal of low quality" and how to set your first price at the market midpoint to avoid an unsustainable "underpricing spiral".

The 30-Day Checklist: A 20-task roadmap designed to move you from self-discovery to your first paying customer in four weeks.

This episode is the "clinical antidote" to the toxic culture of chasing overnight breakthroughs. Whether you are navigating a career change or seeking personal development as a new owner, Kay Jay provides the "boring" truth: the businesses that reliably pay the mortgage are the ones that solve real, recurring problems.

Stop "playing business" and start building a foundation that actually makes money. Let’s get to work.

  • Ep 19: Engineering Your First Viable Business
    2026/07/23

I wrote my book, How to Start a Small Business That Actually Makes Money, in the messy, disorienting wake of a total career collapse. One Monday, I was a senior engineer with a ten-year plan; by Friday, a corporate layoff had erased years of careful architecture. In the vacuum that followed, I tried to pivot based on pure passion—launching an artisanal candle business that left me inhaling fragrance oils while my savings bled dry.

I eventually realized that I didn’t need more "hustle." I needed a clinical, data-driven system to filter hollow fantasies from viable business models. In this episode, I’m sharing the exact framework I used to find profitable ideas hiding in plain sight.

Most people don’t lack ideas; they lack permission to take the ones they already have seriously. We are taught to chase a lightning strike of inspiration, but I’ve found that the best businesses actually start with the leak in the plumbing. My method isn't about being "original"—in fact, originality is not required; execution is.

I’ve learned that expertise is often invisible from the inside because it feels "normal" to you. To uncover yours, I recommend listing three categories of assets:

    • Professional Skills: Look past your job title at the specific tasks you perform, like vendor negotiation or risk identification.
    • Informal Skills: What do people already ask you for help with? If you’re already giving away your time to fix tech problems or reorganize kitchens, you have a validated skill people want.
    • Industry Knowledge: I’ve seen common skills become extraordinary when applied to a specific niche, like a bookkeeper who only serves restaurants.

Every irritation in your daily life is a potential business. For one week, I want you to write down every time something frustrates you—the contractor who doesn’t call back or the neighborhood group begging for a reliable handyman. If a problem is shared by many and has no good current solution, that is where your opportunity lives.

Before I allow myself to invest time or money into a concept, I put it through the $500 Test. I ask: How would I make $500 from this idea in the next 30 days using only my current skills and resources?

This test is designed to do three things:

    1. Force Specificity: It moves you from a vague "concept" to a concrete transaction.
    2. Expose the Customer Problem: It forces you to figure out exactly who you would call and what you would say.
    3. Prove the Direct Path: If you can’t make $500 without a website, a logo, or an audience, you don't have a business yet—you have a fantasy.

As I often say, if you can’t make $500 from an idea in thirty days, you can’t build a business from it in thirty months. The problems don’t go away at scale; they just get more expensive.

The goal of my work isn't for you to just read or listen—it's for you to have a real business by the time you finish. Grab a notebook and start your Idea Shortlist today.

If you want the full worksheets and the clinical blueprint I used to navigate my own "messy middle," you can find them in Book 1 of the How-to miniseries. In the next episode, we will take your validated idea and move into the Five-Conversation Method to see if people will actually hand you money for it.
