  • Sernova + Seraxis: A New Partnership in the Race for a T1D Cure with CEOs Johnathan Rigby and Dr. Will Rust
    2026/10/13

A new company brings together two technologies: lab-grown insulin-producing cells and an implantable pouch designed to help those cells survive and function inside the body. Sernova makes the pouch, Seraxis grows the cells – together they are BetaNova hopes that bringing these two technologies together could move us closer to a functional cure for type 1 diabetes.

So what does this merger really mean? What makes these cells different? And could this approach eventually work without immunosuppressive drugs and actually be available to millions of people with type 1?

I'm talking with the CEOs of the companies that are merging: Jonathan Rigby – who lives with type 1 - and Will Rust about the science, the challenges, and why they believe this combination could be a game changer.

Plus Dexcom presented a few studies at the summer conferences about some pretty significant benefits of CGM, including fewer DKA-related hospital visits for people with type 1 and improved glucose outcomes for people with type 2 who aren't using insulin.

The treatment, called eloraTZP, combines the experimental drug eloralintide with Lilly's approved diabetes and weight-loss medication Zepbound. At the highest dose, participants lost an average of 54.1 pounds. The results are notable because people with type 2 diabetes typically lose less weight with obesity medications than people without diabetes. The study included 367 adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity or overweight. The combination targets three hormones involved in blood sugar, digestion and appetite: GIP, GLP-1 and amylin. Side effects, mainly gastrointestinal, were more common with the combination, and as many as 27% of participants taking eloraTZP stopped treatment. Lilly plans to begin phase 3 trials later this year. https://www.fiercebiotech.com/biotech/lilly-raises-weight-loss-bar-its-amylin-zepbound-combo XX New research suggests ...
