What if the patterns you’ve spent years trying to fix were never signs that something was wrong with you—but intelligent adaptations that once helped you survive?
In this deeply illuminating conversation, I sit down with Zipa Leah Scheinberg, LCSW, developmental trauma theorist, clinician, educator, author, and founder of Developmental Trauma, Decoded™, to explore what happens when childhood development unfolds without the safety, attunement, protection, and connection a child needs.
For nearly two decades, Zipa Leah has worked with adults navigating complex trauma, dissociation, childhood abuse and neglect, attachment wounds, incest, and high-control religious and family systems. She is EMDR Certified, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, a graduate-level instructor, and the creator of the BITES® Framework, which maps five core developmental wounds: Belonging, Identity, Trust, Existential Meaning, and Shame.
Together, we explore some of the questions at the heart of her work:
• Why do our survival patterns make sense, even when they create difficulties in our adult lives?
• What is developmental trauma, and how is it different from single-event trauma?
• How can shame become part of our identity before we even have language to understand what happened to us?
• Why can someone feel like an outsider even when surrounded by people who genuinely love them?
• Why can safety sometimes feel more threatening to the nervous system than chaos?
• How do early developmental wounds affect our relationships, identity, trust, and sense of belonging?
• What changes when we stop viewing survival responses as pathology and begin recognizing the intelligence behind them?
• And what does the path from survivor to sovereign actually look like?
Zipa Leah offers a powerful reframe: development was interrupted, not destroyed. The capacities that were unable to fully develop in childhood can continue developing in adulthood.
We also talk about her Developmental Repair Arc, a structured approach to understanding how healing can move from decoding our patterns and developing safety toward identity development, integration, and a more sovereign sense of self. At the end, Zipa helps me honor parts of my past there were never named. I felt like this was a mini therapy session for the little girl inside me. Hopefully, this episode will help you inner child feel acknowledged in a safe way.
About Zipa Leah Scheinberg
Zipa Leah Scheinberg, LCSW, is a trauma therapist, educator, author, and creator of Developmental Trauma, Decoded™, a framework for understanding how childhood trauma interrupts development and how that development can continue in adulthood.
She is the creator of the BITES® Framework and the author of BELONGING: A Trauma-Informed Experiential Workbook for Repairing Early Childhood Wounds, the first experiential workbook in the Developmental Trauma, Decoded™ series.
BELONGING explores belonging not simply as having people around us, but as a developmental capacity: the ability to experience connection to ourselves, to other people, and to the world. Through trauma-informed practices and reflection, the workbook guides readers through the developmental layers of belonging and toward building capacities that may not have had the opportunity to fully form in childhood.
At the heart of Zipa Leah’s work is a profoundly hopeful idea:
What did not fully develop in childhood can continue to develop now.
