Chapter 28 is one of the most consequential chapters in Scripture: fourteen verses of blessing promise that obedience will elevate Israel above all nations — blessed in city and countryside, in children, crops, herds, and battle, with rain from God's heavenly treasury and a position of lending to nations rather than borrowing from them. Then follow fifty-four verses of covenant curses for disobedience, organized in five escalating waves of increasing severity, culminating in siege, famine, cannibalism, and total exile with a symbolic return to Egypt in ships. Constable observes that the Assyrian destruction of the Northern Kingdom, the Babylonian exile, and the Roman scattering of Israel in A.D. 70 fulfilled these curses with remarkable literalness — making Deuteronomy 28 one of the most striking prophetic chapters in the entire Bible.
