Moses instructs Israel to set up large plastered stones at Shechem and inscribe all the words of the law on them upon entering the land, publicly constituting the Mosaic covenant as Israel's national charter. An altar of uncut stones is to be built on Mt. Ebal for burnt and peace offerings, six tribes stand on Mt. Gerizim to bless the people and six on Mt. Ebal for curses, and the Levites then pronounce twelve specific curses — covering idolatry, dishonoring parents, boundary violations, various sexual sins, and injustice against the vulnerable — with the entire congregation responding "Amen" to each. Constable notes the ceremony at Shechem marked Israel's formal, public acceptance of both the blessings and the obligations of the Mosaic covenant in the land God was giving them.
