In this episode, we talk about how to finish strong when the excitement is gone and the middle of the journey feels repetitive, painful, or uncertain. We break mindset down into the stories we tell ourselves, then build a practical way to reset, return, and take the next faithful step.

    Suite Spots:
    • the middle as the true test of mindset and follow-through
    • mindset as beliefs, expectations, interpretations, and habits of attention
    • how emotional thoughts can feel like facts under stress
    • examining your story to create space for a better response
    • persistence as returning to the next small task
    • resilience as recovering and re-engaging after setbacks
    • Marcus Aurelius on returning after failure
    • determination as recommitment, including asking for help
    • finishing strong as wisdom to continue or redirect
    • naming your season and choosing one action today
    • affirmation to reset, return, and finish what matters

    Science Soul Success

In today’s episode of The SuiteSpot, despite some technical difficulties with our audio, we had the pleasure and the privilege of sitting down with one of the most distinguished psychiatrists in the country, Dr. William B. Lawson, MD, PhD.

Dr. Lawson’s career spans decades of clinical care, research, teaching, and leadership. He served for 15 years as Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Howard University, and he held faculty roles at Vanderbilt, UC Irvine, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Illinois.

He is Professor Emeritus at Howard and at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also led work on health disparities. He trained in psychiatry at Stanford and completed a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology at the National Institute of Mental Health. He is a past president of the Black Psychiatrists of America, the Washington Psychiatric Society, and the DC chapter of Mental Health America.

He has also chaired the Section of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of the National Medical Association and served as editor of the Journal of the National Medical Association.

Dr. Lawson has written more than 200 publications, and his research on serious mental illness, psychopharmacology, and substance use has had federal, industry, and foundation funding for decades.

Throughout his career he has pushed the field to face racial and cultural disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and trust. He founded the Institute for Reducing Disparities, and his honors include the American Psychiatric Association’s Solomon Carter Fuller Award and Jeanne Spurlock Award.

In this conversation, Dr. Lawson talks about what first drew him to science, medicine, and psychiatry. He makes clear that bipolar disorder in the African American community is real, and he explains how it, and depression too, can present differently and be missed as a result.

He also offers advice on the paths anyone can take toward joy and a positive outlook, including taking the long view instead of judging life only by the moment in front of us. Just being in his presence was powerful, and it meant a great deal that someone of his stature would sit with us here on The SuiteSpot. We hope this conversation moves you the way it moved us.

    Science Soul Success

In this episode we keep pushing deeper into mindset by tracing how trust and distrust shape the stories we tell ourselves under pressure. We challenge the reflex to assume betrayal and practice self-trust that stays wise, clear, and courageous.

    Suite Spots:
    • mindset as beliefs, expectations, interpretations, and attention habits
    • trust as a mental story that fills in blanks
    • how distrust shows up in sports, leadership, relationships, and health
    • the self-fulfilling loop where guarded behavior creates guarded responses
    • self-trust as responding well when plans fail
    • making room for imperfection without dropping boundaries
    • faith and ancient wisdom as a guide when outcomes are unclear
    • slowing down assumptions, checking facts, spotting patterns, and releasing control

    • clear communication and getting support for trauma-rooted distrust
