Boulder Valley School District faces a heated community showdown as it eyes closing four schools to cut costs and reallocate resources — but parents are rallying in protest, calling the move disruptive and poorly communicated, especially after surprises like Douglass Elementary’s potential shuttering. With a crucial vote looming in two weeks, families demand transparency on the financials and push back against what they see as another major upheaval for their neighborhoods.

On September 11, 2001, a young man named Welles Crowther—just 24 years old—became an enduring symbol of heroism. When the first plane struck the World Trade Center, he didn’t run; instead, he donned his signature red bandana and began guiding panicked coworkers to safety through smoke-filled stairwells. Trained as a volunteer firefighter, he repeatedly risked his life returning to rescue others after the second plane hit, carrying the injured and extinguishing fires until his own sacrifice. Months later, survivors’ stories led his mother to recognize him—the “man in the red bandana”—transforming him from victim to legend. His legacy lives on: honored by President Obama, featured in books and documentaries, and taught in schools as a beacon of courage. In the darkest hour, Welles proved that one person’s selfless action can ignite lasting inspiration.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife made a tough call this week, euthanizing two young, uncollared male wolves linked to multiple livestock attacks across Pitkin and Rio Blanco Counties — each responsible for four separate incidents between July and September. Ranchers tried cameras, patrols, and hazing to deter the wolves, but the conflict persists as Colorado’s reintroduced wolf population grows. This isn’t the first time: three other wolves have been removed this year under the same policy — euthanized if they cause three livestock attacks in 30 days. Since 2023, 25 wolves have been released, pups are being born, but 19 have died since 2024 — not all from human-wolf conflict.
