Delta Flight 191 crashed while approaching Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 1985 after encountering a powerful microburst, a sudden and dangerous atmospheric phenomenon involving intense downdrafts and rapidly shifting winds.
As the aircraft entered the microburst, the crew struggled to maintain control while powerful changes in wind speed and direction rapidly reduced the aircraft’s performance. The plane crashed near the airport, resulting in 137 fatalities.
The disaster became a major turning point in aviation safety. Investigations led to significant advances in understanding and detecting microbursts, including the development and widespread use of terminal Doppler weather radar and improved onboard wind-shear detection systems.
These technologies gave pilots far greater warning of dangerous wind-shear conditions and dramatically reduced the threat posed by microbursts. The accident ultimately became a tragic but important milestone in the evolution of modern flight safety.
