“S” is more - When Hollywood runs out of sequel ideas, studios turn to the best letter ever - "S." Sci-fi author Jon McBrine tackles pluralized movie sequels: Adrien Brody's philosophical warfare in Predators, Rings accidentally curing insomnia, and Glenn Powell's unexpectedly fun storm-chasing cash grab Twisters.

What is the ultimate secret weapon for Hollywood execs running out of ideas? It isn't bigger budgets or CGI explosions—it’s adding a simple, aggressive, three-letter word to the title. In this episode of Def Rec, self-certified internet-access pop culture authority Jon McBrine breaks down the bizarre cinematic trend of slapping "THE" onto sequels, soft reboots, and franchise course-corrections to make them instantly sound cooler.

Hollywood executives seem to think adding a "2" or a "3" to a title is uninspired—so instead, we got a musical Joker sequel that upset the entire Internet and a Venom trilogy that exists purely to keep Sony’s lawyers employed. Self-proclaimed pop-culture authority Jon McBrine re-titleS cinema's most confusing sequels.

Is 1987’s Masters of the Universe a classic or just a chore your dad forces you to watch? I'm breaking down why the original He-Man film—despite lacking Orko and being 100% pure 80s cheese—still packs more soul than a modern $200 million franchise entry.

Ever wondered what happens when a Hollywood studio sees a perfectly wrapped-up trilogy and says, "Wait, we can wring more money out of this!"? I dive into the highly "scientific" world of movie Part 4s. From Ghostface getting a 2011 wake up call to Indiana Jones fighting CGI monkeys, and Forky sparking a full-on existential crisis—I'm ranking the top three fourth entries that shattered beloved trilogies forever.
