概要

My business partner and brother since the sixth grade hates being on camera. He sat down anyway, and told us what it cost him to stop carrying everything alone.

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH / LISTEN:
Stephane Bellande has been my brother since the sixth grade at St. Angela's in Mattapan. Today he's my business partner at Signature Brand Logistics, a twelve-year force behind Smoov Network's run at Boston Carnival, and a man who would rather build it than be seen building it.

This isn't an interview. It's two friends who grew up together going straight at the stuff most men never say on camera: the ego, the stubbornness, the sleepless nights, and the help we're too proud to ask for. If you're working a 9-to-5 while building something on the side, raising a family, or trying to figure out what legacy looks like while you're still in the middle of it, this one's for you.

FULL EPISODE WRITE-UP:
Some guests you book. Some you grew up with. Stephane Bellande and I met in the sixth grade at St. Angela's in Mattapan, in the weakest fight either one of us has ever been in, because a bathroom full of kids wanted to see it. Thirty years later, he was the best man at my wedding, I was the best man at his, and we co-own Signature Brand Logistics together.

Stephane came from Port-au-Prince to Mattapan at eight years old. Overnight. Right before Christmas, middle of the school week. He talks about what that kind of uprooting does to a kid, and why it's the reason he still checks on the quiet ones in the room. From there: an engineering degree that left him depressed behind a screen, de-icing planes at one in the morning in a New England winter, and more than a decade climbing the corporate ladder, where watching entrepreneurs bet on themselves planted the ownership bug.

Today he's a hybrid. Still in the 9-to-5, while running day-to-day operations for our trucking company, shooting real estate photo and drone work through New England Insider, covering sports with New England Sports Lab, and twelve years deep with Smoov Network representing the Haitian community. We get into why he chose partnership over going it alone, how you check your ego when you're in business with your friends, the year it took him to find balance when the business started taking a hit out of his marriage and family time, and how he protects his mental health when the stress stacks up.

Then we go into the three pillars. What did he have to unlearn? Asking for help. What did it cost him to become who he is? In his words, "the old me." And when he wanted to walk away, he held onto one line: these people ain't built better than us, they ain't smarter than us, they don't work harder than us.

For a man who'd rather stay behind the scenes, anonymous famous, his definition of legacy came down to one word. And it might be the whole show.

This is a conversation about fatherhood, entrepreneurship, partnership, mental health, and building a legacy for your kids and your community while you're still running your leg of the race. If it hits home, subscribe to Dear Legacy, drop a comment, and share it with someone building their legacy in real time. Then go back through the catalog and start from the beginning.

Define it. Build it. Live it.
