Luke picks his pen back up with one small word he has not used in years. We. He is on the boat now, and so is Aristarchus, because even the greatest missionary in the New Testament needed friends beside him. A pagan centurion named Julius treats Paul with the very kindness the New Testament uses to describe God himself, a reminder that providence often arrives through people who do not yet know the God moving them. At Fair Havens, with the safe season closing, Paul warned that sailing on would end in loss of cargo, ship, and lives, wisdom earned from three shipwrecks already behind him. The centurion overruled him. Then a gentle south wind sprang up and everyone felt confirmed. That same gentle breeze would carry them into the storm of their lives. A favorable wind is not the same as a faithful direction. Paul gave his counsel, was overruled, and stayed in the boat anyway.
