This is the third time Luke records Paul’s conversion, each version shaped for its audience. For Agrippa, Paul collapses the whole event into a single conversation on the road and adds a detail the earlier accounts left out. It is hard for you to kick against the goads. The Spirit had been prodding him long before Damascus, probably since Stephen, and his conversion was simply the moment Saul stopped kicking back. Most testimonies are like that. The dramatic moment is real, but it comes at the end of a long, patient campaign. Then comes the commission, woven entirely from the prophetic call language of Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, stacking five gospel assignments into one sentence: open eyes, turn from darkness to light, transfer from Satan’s power to God, receive forgiveness, receive an inheritance. The Gentile-hating Pharisee was sent to the Gentiles. Grace did not just forgive Paul. It reversed the trajectory of his whole life.
