Two years, two governors, one assassination plot, and finally a king who actually understood the categories. For the first time since his arrest, Paul was speaking to someone who could follow the argument. He stretched out his hand and framed his whole defense around one word: hope. He was on trial, he said, for the hope God promised the ancestors, the same hope every Pharisee in Jerusalem prayed toward morning and evening. The only difference was whether it had already begun in a man named Jesus. Then came the question that was the hinge of the speech. Why do you consider it incredible that God raises the dead? Paul did not edit his past. He named his cruelty in detail, the saints he imprisoned, the votes he cast for their deaths, because the persecutor turned preacher is exhibit A. The man telling the story is the proof of the doctrine.
