National Academy of Medicine member David Wilkes has spent his career on the parts of medicine that happen before a diagnosis, before a cure, before a headline: training the physician-scientists who make discoveries possible in the first place. As dean emeritus of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and CEO of the Amos Institute for Medical Faculty Development, he's carrying forward a program the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ran for over four decades. David is a pulmonary critical care physician and renowned for his own physician scientist work in the lab. In the early 1990s, his research uncovered an autoimmune trigger behind lung transplant rejection, a finding colleagues at first dismissed as heresy — he was right, and it earned him the American Thoracic Society's highest honor: The Trudeau Medal. We talk about the difference between a mentor and a sponsor, what actually happens when a research pipeline dries up, and why training the next generation of physician-scientists might matter more than any single discovery. ▶ Subscribe @resaelewissmd on YouTube — new episodes Wednesdays. 🎙️ Search "The Visible Voices Podcast" on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. 🔗 AIMFD website: https://aimfd.org/
