David Dances Before the LORD : When Reverence and Joy Finally Meet
2 Samuel 6:12–23; 1 Chronicles 15:11–29; 16:1–6
Three months have passed since Uzzah died beside the Ark of God.
The first procession ended in shock. David became angry, then afraid. The ark was diverted to the house of Obed-edom.
But something has changed.
David has learned that the problem was not God's presence. The problem was Israel's failure to transport the ark according to the prescribed order.
Now David tries again.
This time the Levites consecrate themselves.
This time the ark is carried on shoulders.
This time sacrifice accompanies celebration.
And this time Jerusalem receives the ark.
David dances before the LORD with all his might.
The king removes himself from the normal expectations of royal dignity and celebrates openly before God.
But from a window, Michal watches.
And she despises him in her heart.
What follows is not simply a disagreement about dancing.
It is a collision involving worship, marriage, public image, royal identity, humiliation, painful history and competing understandings of dignity.
To understand this passage fairly, we must also remember Michal's story. She once loved David. She helped him escape Saul. She was later given to another man. Years afterward, David demanded her return as part of his political settlement with Abner.
So when Michal looks through that window, she is not merely a woman who dislikes enthusiastic worship. She carries a history.
This episode explores how reverence and joy belong together, why corrected worship can become deeper worship, how leadership relates to humility, why wholehearted devotion is not the same as performance, and why difficult biblical characters deserve careful rather than simplistic interpretation.
At the centre is a question:
Can you become small in your own eyes without becoming careless about the dignity of others?
