David Captures Jerusalem : Faith That Confronts Strongholds and Establishes a New Centre
2 Samuel 5:6–10; 1 Chronicles 11:4–9
David is finally king over all Israel.
But receiving the crown does not complete his assignment.
The nation is still divided geographically and historically, and one strategically important fortress remains outside Israelite control: Jerusalem.
The Jebusites are so confident in their position that they mock David. Their message is essentially:
“You will never enter here.”
Yet David captures the fortress.
Jerusalem becomes:
עִיר דָּוִד, Ir David
“The City of David.”
And the biblical narrator explains David's increasing greatness with one decisive sentence:
וַיְהִי דָוִד הָלוֹךְ וְגָדוֹל וַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת עִמּוֹ
Vayehi David halokh vegadol, va-YHWH Elohei Tzeva'ot immo.
“David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him.”
This episode explores Jerusalem's strategic importance, the difficult Hebrew term צִנּוֹר, tsinnor, the meaning of Zion, the psychology of intimidation, the danger of confusing strongholds with impossibilities, and the difference between possessing authority and using that authority to establish something enduring.
Because sometimes receiving the promise is not the end of the journey.
Sometimes it is when the real work begins.
