Each episode opened with Mitchell receiving a "dangerous assignment" from "The Commissioner" (Herb Butterfield), a voice on the other end of a phone call. These assignments sent Mitchell to exotic locales all over the world, often to deal with espionage, sabotage, and the rescue of fellow agents or locals in distress. His cover identity in almost all his adventures was that of a suave foreign correspondent.
- Plot: Mitchell would quickly become embroiled in missions requiring his skills in combat, deduction, and outwitting adversaries to resolve perilous situations and protect American interests. The show was known for its fast-paced plots and exotic settings.
- Cast:Steve Mitchell: Brian Donlevy
- The Commissioner: Herb Butterfield
- Other recurring and guest actors included Tony Barrett, William Conrad, Paul Frees, Lyle Talbot, Jan Arvan, Laura Mason, and many more.
- Broadcast History: The show originally aired on NBC, with a pilot episode in 1949, followed by a series that ran from 1950 to 1953.
- Legacy: "Dangerous Assignment" is remembered for its adventurous spirit and tough, no-nonsense protagonist. It's often seen as a precursor to later spy shows and films in the genre.
- Availability: Many episodes of "Dangerous Assignment" are available online through platforms like the Internet Archive, YouTube, and various old-time radio podcast sites, allowing modern listeners to enjoy these classic tales of international intrigue.
