Hello and welcome, you’re watching Living Supernaturally, the daily devotion of All People's church. Today for our devotion, we are studying some verses from the epistle of 1 John which is 1 John chapter 2, verses 15 to 17, it says here, ‘Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.’ As we meditate on the love of God and what it does, this is what we see here. It is a ‘don’t do’ kind of an instruction. It says, do not love the world or the things in the world. What does John mean by that? He is obviously not talking about the world that God has created by the worldly system, the ways of the world or things of the flesh. He goes on to describe them and be specific about that. It says, if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. He goes on to explain what is this that is in the world, that we are not to love. It is talking about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. Lust of the flesh refers to the craving, the wrong appetite or the desires of the flesh that are there which lead a person if they are not careful to satisfy this craving and the appetite in wrong ways, in ways that are not ordained by God. God knows that we are created with certain bodily appetites as well but God wants these to be satisfied in the ways that He has ordained so that it can lead us closer to Him and not away from Him, so that it can be edifying and not destroy ourselves or others’ lives. So, this is what we see. We see here the lust of the flesh does the opposite of that. To give in to the lust of the flesh is to destroy ourselves and others’ lives and to distance ourselves from God. The second thing is lust of the eyes, it is again a desire or craving of the eyes to just look and behold and this is very subtle indeed because with all that is there on social media and other platforms, we see that there is a pull, a desire that wants us to continue to lock in and look and stay there. The bible is warning us against the lust of the eyes. The third one is the pride of life. The pride in things that are not of God, pride in position, influence, power and so on and the Lord really warns us against all of this. As we pray today, let’s pray for God’s protection against these things that we may walk in humility and power. Let’s pray, Father, we thank you for this warning ‘do not’ that we see in scripture. Whatever follows you asked us not to do it and it is for our good, whenever you say ‘do not’. We want to take note of the ‘do not’ of lusting of the flesh, eyes and also pride of life. We pray that you will enable us to walk in righteousness by the power of your Spirit, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
