Have we become too dependent on technology?

It's easy to take for granted how much technology does for us every day. Our phones remember our contacts. GPS tells us where to go. Google can find almost anything we need to know. As a result, we rely less on remembering and more on retrieving.

And now AI can help us understand information, work through problems, and even come up with answers for us.

There’s no doubt about it: modern technology makes our lives easier.

But if technology can always give us the answer, what’s our incentive to work things out for ourselves?

And if we stop practicing that, do we eventually lose the ability to think critically?

In this episode of Dad Think, I talk about our growing dependence on technology, how that dependence is changing the way we learn and think, and what we might be losing when we rely on technology to do too much for us.

What can life before the feed teach us about raising kids today?

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if my kids could experience the world I grew up in. There was something about growing up in the 90s and early 2000s that I don’t think we fully appreciate anymore.

There were natural stopping points.

There were long stretches of boredom.

And there wasn’t always something demanding your attention.

My kids are growing up in a very different world, one that is being shaped by artificial intelligence, smartphones, social media, and other technologies that didn’t exist when I was their age.

Technology is changing how we work, communicate, spend our free time, and even how we think.

As parents, what can we learn from the world before the feed that might help us raise kids in the world after it?

In this first episode of Dad Think, I explore the differences between the childhood I experienced and the one my kids are growing up in, and the lessons we can learn from life before the feed.
