Juicero raised more than $100 million to build an extraordinarily sophisticated connected juice press. Then reporters showed that its proprietary produce packs could be squeezed by hand, sometimes just as quickly as using the machine.
In the first episode of Unsolicited DD: Data Room, we look past the easy conclusion that Juicero was simply a ridiculous product. The more useful question is how experienced operators, engineers and investors ended up solving increasingly difficult engineering, manufacturing and scaling problems without continuously retesting whether the expensive centerpiece of the system was actually necessary.
The takeaway: don’t just ask whether you can engineer the product. Keep testing which part actually creates the customer value, and whether the difficult part needs to exist at all.
About Unsolicited DDUnsolicited DD is the broader world behind Data Room: recurring characters with different business and investment lenses examining companies, strategy, products, markets and decisions. The aim is serious analysis without pretending there is only one reasonable way to see a case.
