How do we embrace the changes in our cultures without going through the trauma?

Manu joined me from New York.

We've known each other since 1998. We met in a restaurant, young and figuring it out. Twenty-something years later we sat down to talk about culture.

He came in thinking we'd talk about company culture. We ended up somewhere else entirely.

At 52, Manu is peeling back things he didn't know he was carrying. The culture that told a Black man in Texas not to talk too much. The father who died in 2016 whose death got brushed under the rug because feeling it didn't feel safe. The kid in the room always told to stay in a child's place—who now talks for a living.

He kept coming back to one word.

Safety.

Not comfort. Not certainty. The kind of safety that lets you fail and still know the core of you is intact.

He asked a question I haven't been able to put down:

How do we embrace the changes in our cultures without going through the trauma?

No answers. Just two old friends willing to go somewhere real.
