  • Nigel Kneale's Murrain (1975)
    2025/11/14
Nigel Kneale was a pioneer of British drama on both the big and small screens creating characters such as Professor Bernard Quatermass and revered shows like The Stone Tape and Year of the Sex Olympics. My guest for the next three episodes, Pat Veil, is a huge fan of his 1976 anthology series Beasts which helped to cement his love of 1970s British TV. In this opening episode we review Murrain from the 1975 series Against The Crowd. This episode was so succesful it led to ATV commisioning the wiriter for hos own six part series.

Against The Crowd episode 3: Murrain. Written by Nigel Kneale. Directed by John Cooper. Starring David Simeon. Bernard Lee and Una Brandon-Jones.

  • Precoding The Matrix
    2025/10/23
On it's release in 1999 The Matrix wowed audiences with its mix of kung fu action, dazzling visuals and mindbending concept of living in a virtual world. However, starting decades before on the small screen, the concept of living in a simulation has already been portrayed in the most imaginative ways. Ian is joined by Holger Hasse to review three such examples!

World On A Wire (1973). Directed by Ranier Werner Fassbinder. Written by Fassbinder and Fritz Muller-Scherz. Based on the novel simulacron-3 by Daniel F Galouye. starring Klaus Lowitsch and Barbara Valentin.

Red Dwarf. Season 5 episode 6. "Back to Reality" (1992). Directed by Juliet May. Written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. Starring Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Rober Llewellyn.

Welcome to Paradox. Episode 4 "News from D Street" (1998) Written by Miguel Tajada-Flores. Starring A Martinez and Claudette Mink
