  • A Change Is Gonna Come: The Evolution of Religion
    2026/10/22

In this episode, Bill and James bust the myth that religions don’t change over time by exploring three questions: why are we religious, when did religion first appear, and what does the future hold for religion?
They discuss the evolutionary roots of religiosity, the seeds of which can arguably be seen in other primates. They analyze the idea that the brain contains a Hyperactive Agency Detection Device (HADD) and the tribal benefits religion could bestow, such as fostering group cohesion. They also review how spiritual mechanisms adapted as humans clustered into larger groups, shifting from animism and ancestor worship to moralistic deities, and debate whether these transitions undermine the validity of a static religious faith.
As for the future of faith, Bill notes the rise of the "nones" in the U.S. and the impact of scientific literacy on religious affiliation. They conclude by reflecting on the need for humility and openness in both science and religion, suggesting that the future of religion should integrate scientific knowledge while maintaining its beneficial communal aspects.

  • Don't Fear the Reaper: What Comes After Life?
    2026/10/15

One thing we all have in common is that we’re going to die. For most, that knowledge produces great existential terror. We want to live forever and be reunited with friends and family in an eternal paradise. We want to hear Janis Joplin singing in a band with Eddie Van Halen and Neil Peart!

But what science has taught us about the brain and our experience of selfhood implies that life has no sequel. Stephen Hawking famously compared the mind to a computer and quipped, “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

In this episode, Bill and James discuss how humanity’s belief in life after death has evolved over time, spawning a wide range of religious ideas from Heaven and Hell to reincarnation. We also debate if this obsession with death detracts from living a good life in the here and now. Can the awareness of death be leveraged to enrich our lives on Earth?

  • Dust In the Wind: What Are We Doing Here?
    2026/10/08

Are we here for a reason? In this episode, Bill and James dig into the meaning of life—the uniquely human drive to feel important and attach meaning to everything. Where does this compulsion come from? What is the best way to derive meaning from life? Is it possible to accept a life without meaning and still feel happy and fulfilled?

In our quest for answers, we explore how science and religion approach purpose in our lives, noting the similarities and differences. We discuss how morality, identity, and character intertwine with a meaningful life and sense of purpose. More broadly, we examine how science and religion arrive at a similar conclusion that the best way to achieve meaning is through the service to others, whether that be family, community, charity, or strangers on the street. Psychologists and theologians agree that personal fulfillment is often attained through using one's strengths to help others, rather than through self-interested pursuits. We review the philosophical and evolutionary basis for human cooperation, emphasizing the importance of humility, open-mindedness, and secular ethics in building a more cooperative and compassionate society.
