Global Wheat Market Summary

  • The global wheat market is facing increased uncertainty as geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea intersect with shifting production and stock forecasts. Russian export expectations have been reduced, while revisions to US production and ending stocks point to a tighter domestic balance sheet, reinforcing the potential for greater price volatility.
  • In Russia, Ukrainian drone strikes on the Novorossiysk port and subsequent counterattacks on Ukrainian infrastructure are raising concerns over the stability of Black Sea wheat export flows. Sovecon has lowered its August Russian wheat export forecast to 3.0-3.4 million metric tons, below the 4.5 million metric tons recorded last year. IKAR has also reduced its Russian wheat crop forecast to 90 million metric tons.
  • In the United States, the latest USDA and WASDE estimates present a mixed picture. US wheat production was reduced by 5 million bushels to 1.531 billion bushels, while ending stocks were cut to 717 million bushels. Lower export expectations, combined with the reduction in stocks, indicate a tighter US wheat balance than previously anticipated.
  • Globally, higher production estimates for Canada and Ukraine have largely offset reductions in the European Union, resulting in a slight increase in projected global ending stocks. However, deteriorating spring wheat conditions in parts of the United States add another layer of supply uncertainty. Conditions have improved in Minnesota and Idaho, while Montana and several other states continue to report weaker crop prospects.
