Global Maize Market Summary

  • Global maize markets are balancing rising production against resilient export demand and changing trade policies. Larger crops in the United States, Brazil, and Argentina are increasing supply and weighing on price sentiment, while strong exports and import restrictions could provide support to the market.
  • In the United States, maize production has expanded on a larger planted area of 96.7 million acres, with national yields estimated at 180.7 bushels per acre. Production is expected to reach approximately 13 billion bushels. Strong demand from key trading partners, particularly Mexico, is helping absorb the additional supply, although weather risks and crop conditions remain important factors for the market.
  • South American production estimates have also increased, with Brazil's crop projected at 140 million metric tons and Argentina's at 70.5 million metric tons. The larger forecasts are contributing to a more bearish supply outlook. Argentina's revised estimate is notably above the U.S. Department of Agriculture's projection, while strong Brazilian exports continue despite a slower second crop harvest.
  • Elsewhere, favorable weather and agricultural conditions have lifted South Africa's maize harvest forecast to 17,363 tons, reinforcing its position as a regional net exporter. In Turkey, 2.701 million tons of a 3 million ton duty-free maize import quota has already been used. The potential introduction of a 130% import tariff after the quota is exhausted could significantly raise import costs, reduce future demand, and alter regional trade flows.
