  • Ep #353 Psychopathy and Coercive Control: Why British Airways Killer Robert Brown Remains High Risk with Hetti Barkworth-Nanton CBE, Part 8
    2026/07/13
Joanna Simpson was brutally killed by her estranged husband, British Airways pilot Robert Brown, just one week before their divorce was due to be finalised. Brown pre-dug a grave and hid her body in Great Windsor Park. He finally admitted killing Joanna with a claw hammer, but he was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter which meant he was eligible for release after 13 years. Following years of campaigning by Joanna's mother Diana Parkes, best friend Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Laura Richards and thousands of Crime Analyst listeners, Brown’s automatic release was stopped in 2023. He came up for parole in April 2026. In this episode, Laura interviews Hetti Barkworth-Nanton and they take you behind the Parole Board Hearing sharing new details about Brown's psychopathic behaviour and ongoing risk. Laura analyses and discusses with Hetti the significance of the evidence considered by the panel, including the relevance of coercive control, the importance of judicial sentencing remarks, and why understanding behavioural patterns - not simply convictions - is imperative when assessing dangerousness and risk. In this episode Laura and Hetti discuss: The significance of the fact-finding process prior to the Parole Board Hearing. What the panel learned about Robert Brown's behaviour and psychology from a 330 page dossier. Why psychopathy and behavioural patterns matter in risk assessment. The importance of coercive control when assessing risk and dangerousness. The knife incident and why it remained significant despite no criminal conviction. Why the original sentencing remarks became crucial evidence years later. The difference between criminal convictions and behavioural evidence. What "retained culpability" means and why it mattered at the Parole Board Hearing. Lessons for professionals assessing high-risk perpetrators. Why understanding coercive control saves lives. This episode continues Crime Analyst's landmark series examining Joanna Simpson's murder, the campaign that prevented Robert Brown's release, and the lessons every professional -and every listener - can learn about coercive control, risk assessment and the importance of understanding dangerous behaviour before tragedy occurs. • Ep #351 Judge Rowland's Egregious Misjudgement: Jazmine’s Parents Demand Accountability. Hampshire Serial Gang Rape Case, Part 4
    2026/07/06
In this exclusive interview Laura is joined by Jazmine’s parents following the Court of Appeal's decision to overturn the unduly lenient sentences handed to two teenage boys convicted of 10 counts of rape of two girls in Hampshire. After widespread public outrage and a legal challenge by the Attorney General, the Court of Appeal ruled that the original sentences failed to reflect the seriousness of the offences. Two boys, who had initially avoided custody, were re-sentenced to four years' detention. Whilst the decision marked an important step towards accountability, Jazmine’s parents explain in detail why it is still not enough and what needs to change– including a personal plea to Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr.  Laura shares her analysis of the 52-page Judgement from the Court of Appeal and Judge Rowland’s Sentencing Remarks in the context of the Sentencing Guidelines and increasing male violence to girls and women. In this episode, Laura, and Jazmine’s parents discuss: The severe psychological impact and harm to Jazmine; How evidence of the victim’s trauma was overlooked by Judge Rowland in favour of his impression; How expert opinion about a sharp implement being used to cut victim C2’s clothing was overlooked in favour of Judge Rowland’s impression; Judge Rowland’s treatment of the boys vs the girls; The over focus on the boys so-called vulnerabilities whilst ignoring the girls; The sentencing guidelines – what needs to change; Lack of training and accountability for Judges and why this must change; The foundation established by Jazmine and her family to support victims and create lasting change. The courage shown by Jazmine and her family in speaking publicly helps shine a light on the realities of sexual violence and the urgent need for judicial accountability and reform. More from Jazmine’s Family: Stronger Than Silence Foundation Support the Foundation If you have not already listened, Laura previously analysed the broader Hampshire serial gang rape case, the offenders’ histories, the warning signs, escalating behaviours, and the systemic failures that allowed dangerous patterns to go unchecked.
