  • Writing comedy, scripts and sketches with Jane Postlethwaite
    2023/03/26

In this episode I’m speaking to writer, comedian and actor Jane Postlethwaite.

Jane’s work has been seen at Brighton Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe and the Women in Comedy Festival. Her comedy characters, who are often very quirky and dark, have been heard on BBC Radio 4. Alongside working on numerous projects like her new stand up show and writing scripts for TV and radio, she runs online comedy workshops for women.

I first met Jane when I signed up to one of her comedy courses, which I did as part of my research and writing practice for the novel I’m working on at the moment. It was great fun, and I loved Jane’s approach to coming up with ideas and material for sketches and shows.

In this episode, Jane talks about:

    • How she found a love of comedy through an acting course
    • Why she enjoys writing non-stereotypical northern and female characters
    • How making the writing process fun helps her to get her ideas down on paper
    • Why she thinks it’s important to keep a top drawer of ideas for your creative work
    • And how she’s continually investing in her own writing and creativity skills and development

    I hope you enjoy it.

  • Memoirist Malcolm McLean talks about writing Freak Like Me: Confessions of a 90s Pop Groupie
    2023/03/19

Hi and welcome to the Creatives of Habit podcast with me Claire Gamble

In this episode of Creatives of Habit I’m talking to memoirist and pop culture writer, Malcolm McLean

Malcolm has written a really funny memoir, which is called Freak Like Me: Confessions of a 90s Pop Groupie.

In his book, Malcolm reveals how growing up he would escape his small town in Surrey to follow his favourite pop stars around London, become a regular in the Top of the Pops audience, and also sneak into the Brit Awards, not just once, but three times.

He’s got loads of amazing anecdotes, including hanging out with Posh Spice’s Mum, getting compliments from Beyoncé and ditching Mel and Sue to go and schmooze with Cher.

In this episode, Malcolm talks about how valuable a writing course was to help him develop his craft, the process he went through to turn his idea into an actual book, what he learnt about himself along the way, and of course, some of his favourite memories from his days of being a 90s pop groupie.

Follow Malcolm and see some of his pop star memorabilia, including photos with pop stars like Geri Halliwell, B*Witched, Pink, Hear'Say and more! @freaklikemebook
