Have you ever been mistaken for someone you're not? Pastor Jeff Bucknam has, and it got him thinking about counterfeits. The kind that look convincing from a distance, but don't hold up on closer inspection.

That's exactly what Jesus is dealing with in John chapter 8. He's surrounded by people who have, in some sense, believed in Him. They followed Him. They used the right words. From a distance, it looked real. But Jesus isn't impressed by appearances — and in this passage, He draws a sharp and uncomfortable line between counterfeit faith and the genuine article.

And here's what makes this passage so unsettling: the people Jesus is talking to don't think they have a problem. They're confident they're on the right side.
