  • 1974 Revolution: 18. Resistance & Protest Songs

    During Portugal's dictatorship, music quietly resisted. With its subtle (or not) critiques, protest songs from provided a vehicle to voice dissent. "Grândola, Vila Morena" by Afonso became an anthem of the Carnation Revolution - but that's for another episode.

    Protest music flourished, with artists like Adriano Correia de Oliveira and Fausto Bordalo Dias confronting censorship sometimes through metaphor, sometimes overt critique. Even Eurovision became a stage for protest.
