Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father is a podcast about the questions that shape our lives—but rarely get explored deeply enough.

What is love? What is success? What is pain? What does it mean to live authentically? Why are we here? And who are we beneath everything we’ve been taught to believe?

Dan Olschwang and Carlos Vasquez sit down for honest, unscripted conversations that go beyond surface-level advice and quick fixes.

The idea behind the name is simple: fathers are meant, in part, to prepare us for life. But few of us were ever fully prepared for the deeper parts of being human.

These are the conversations we wish we had.

No scripts. No predetermined answers. Just curiosity, lived experience, challenging questions, and a willingness to look deeper.

We may not give you the answers—but we hope we help you ask better questions and experience your life differently.

  • Why We Change, Grow & Keep Searching for More | Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father

What if evolution isn't only something that happens to a species over millions of years?

What if it's happening inside you right now?

In Episode 5 of Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father, Dan and Carlos explore one of the biggest questions we've taken on yet:

    Why do we evolve?

Why is there something inside human beings that keeps reaching for more?

More experience. More understanding. More growth. More expression. More life.

And why is pain so often the thing that finally forces us to change?

Dan introduces the idea of two very different forces that can move a human life forward: being pushed by fear, pain and circumstances—or being pulled by curiosity, passion and the desire to experience more of what life has to offer.

That distinction opens the door to a much deeper conversation.

We explore whether most people are actually choosing their lives or operating on patterns and programming they barely recognize.

I reflect on my own experience in prison, where repetition and routine could turn life into a machine, and how reaching one of the darkest points of my life ultimately forced me to question the programming that had brought me there.

From there, the conversation moves into consciousness, spirituality, science, God, the human experience, death, reincarnation, alignment, healing, artificial intelligence and what the next stage of human evolution might look like.

Dan shares his own philosophical framework throughout the conversation, not as predetermined answers, but as another way of exploring questions most of us rarely stop long enough to ask.

    We explore questions including:

    • What does evolution actually mean?

    • Why are human beings constantly driven toward “more”?

    • Does technology mean humanity is actually evolving?

    • Were human beings built for comfort—or challenge?

    • Why does pain accelerate transformation?

    • Are you being pushed by fear or pulled by purpose?

    • Why can material success still leave someone feeling empty?

    • How much of what we believe we want is actually programming?

    • Are most people living on autopilot?

    • What happens when we resist change?

    • Does evolution require pain?

    • Why is curiosity such a powerful driver of growth?

    • Why do we evolve at all?

    • What is consciousness?

    • Is consciousness connected to what people call God or Source?

    • Why does the human experience exist?

    • Can evolution happen within a single lifetime?

    • Is death part of the evolutionary experience?

    • Why are human beings so afraid of death?

    • Can making peace with mortality make us more free?

    • What role could AI play in the next stage of human evolution?

    • Can AI ever become conscious?

    • How do we choose the right teachers as we evolve?

    • What happens when we resist our own evolution?

  • Family: Parents, Patterns & Breaking the Cycle | Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father
    2026/10/09

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Our family is the first place we begin learning what the world is.

Before we understand language, identity, relationships or even ourselves, we're already absorbing messages about safety, love, fear, belonging and what life is supposed to look like.

But how much of what we carry into adulthood actually belongs to us?

In Episode 4 of Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father, Dan and Carlos explore family — the good, the bad and the ugly.

They discuss how parents and caregivers shape the earliest version of our identity, how fear and unresolved pain can move from one generation to another, why children often become mirrors for their parents, and what it means to eventually push against the family “mold” and become your own person.

Carlos also shares his experience of reconnecting with his family after years in the streets and prison and discovering that setting boundaries did not mean loving them any less. In some cases, those boundaries actually made the relationships healthier.

    The conversation explores:

    • What makes a family?

    • How much of our identity begins in childhood?

    • What parents unknowingly pass to the next generation

    • Generational trauma and inherited patterns

    • Why children can become our greatest teachers

    • Whether parents are automatically right

    • Rebellion and becoming your own person

    • Healthy parenting and independence

    • Social media, technology and modern family life

    • Setting boundaries with parents and relatives

    • Why family knows exactly how to trigger us

    • Unconditional love between parents and children

    • Whether a child's struggles represent a parent's failure

    • What we want the next generation to inherit

    • Whether we owe anything to our family

    • Blended and adoptive families

    • Resentment, blame and forgiveness

    • Breaking generational patterns

    • How changing yourself can change the family around you

At the center of the conversation is a difficult but hopeful idea:

We may not get to choose the family system that first shapes us, but as we grow, we can begin deciding what we want to carry forward.

This is Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father — a series built around the questions about life, meaning, relationships, fear, family, purpose and the human experience that so many of us never had the opportunity to ask.

If there is a conversation you wish you could have had with your father, leave the question in the comments. It may become a future episode.

And here's a question for this episode:

What is one belief, behavior or pattern you inherited from your family that you've had to question for yourself?

  • What Is Love, Really? Soulmates, Relationships & Why We Choose Each Other | Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father
    2026/10/02

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

We say we love our partners. Our children. Our parents. Our friends.

    But what is love, really?

And how much of what we call love was actually taught to us by our childhood, our wounds, our culture and the relationships we experienced growing up?

In the third episode of Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father, Dan and Carlos explore one of the deepest questions one could ask a father:

What is love, and what is the purpose of relationships in our lives?

This conversation goes far beyond romance.

Dan and Carlos talk about how people learn what love means, why two people can experience love completely differently, how childhood wounds affect our ability to give and receive love, why relationships can expose parts of ourselves we cannot see alone, and whether there really is such a thing as a soulmate.

Dan shares his perspective that love is something experienced through connection, an exchange that becomes deeper as two people become more open, healed and aligned.

That leads us into some uncomfortable questions.

    Is “self-love” actually love?

    Do soulmates really exist?

How do you know when you have found yours?

Should marriage matter, or is commitment what actually matters?

Can open relationships reach the same depth as complete commitment to one person?

What happens when one person in a relationship keeps growing and the other doesn't?

And can the person we love become one of the greatest catalysts for our own healing?

This is Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father — a series built around the questions about life, meaning, relationships, fear, purpose and the human experience that so many of us never had the opportunity to ask.
