Welcome to Telling Great Stories. I'm Nate Campbell, and my grandfather Tom was the best storyteller I'd ever met in my life. He passed away in 2021, and nobody ever told his stories in a book or really in a magazine article or anywhere other than just around circles that knew Tom. Currently, I'm writing a book teaching the framework of my grandpa Tom and his storytelling abilities, and this podcast is about telling great stories.Today, I wanted to talk to you about consistency and how we can keep staying consistent. This is something that has really held me back a lot in life. I have always felt that I wasn't consistent, or I didn't follow through, or I just started things and I didn't finish things, or I didn't have discipline, or fill in the blank. The thing that shifted that for me was that Leila Hormozi, on her podcast, said she when she was a fitness trainer, people would come to her and say, "I'm not consistent, or I don't have discipline." She would say, "Well, okay, tell me if you're able to not go to the gym. Do you skip going to the gym a lot?" They're like, "Yeah, yeah, I almost skip the gym every single day."She goes, "Okay, let's just stop there. You are consistent. You do have discipline. Your discipline is just focused in the wrong direction. Your discipline and consistency is focused on not going to the gym instead of going to the gym." It was kind of funny, but it just put me into this mindset of, "What is my excuse? What am I doing instead of the thing that I should be doing?" And for Telling Great Stories, it is getting my voice out there, getting my message out there, getting connected with you so that I can help you to tell great stories. I'm not on this podcast telling great stories. I'm on this podcast so that I can teach telling great stories.I want to be your coach. I want to be your mentor. I want to help you, and that's really my calling. I'm also a student of life, and so if I'm going to be a student of life, what should I be a student of life of? It's storytelling. I didn't realize, through all the books I've read over the last decade, that I've leaned into the story part so much.I just reread the book The Alchemist, and man, I can't tell you how many times that book gave me goosebumps. Right now, I'm reading a new book called A Sand County Almanac, which is from the 1940s by Aldo Leopold.I just really encourage you to lean in and be consistent. For me, with this podcast, I have about a 12-minute drive from the house to the office. I make it every day, and today's Sunday. I'm still making that drive because I need to. I've burned the boat, right? I've gone all in on coaching aspiring authors, coaching entrepreneurs, coaching people who have a legacy that they want to pass on, whether that's a farmer, a rancher, or someone who's retired.I was just at a conference this weekend with 300 individuals who are trying to create a movement to have more local food eaten within the state of Montana, more Montana-grown food eaten by consumers here in Montana. That word "consumer" is one that was talked about a lot: Are we creating consumers? Are we creating customers? We want to create customers, and it was one of those mind shifts that we can have as business owners.I don't want you to just consume this. I want you to tune in every day and get better, and that's my ask of you. Most of these podcast episodes will be about 10 minutes, and if you want to become great at storytelling, tune in because this is my journey as well as your journey. I'm at the beginning. I just started this in October. Today is, I think, October 23rd or 24th, and I might even be on the 25th. I don't even know the day of the week right now.I'm just so fired up to get out there and help you and be a part of this movement because stories are what's passed on. Stories are what matters. Stories are the things that make life interesting. They're the spice of life, and the best way to document them is by telling them. It's by taking action. In my book, I have a framework that is the TOM framework: Tom, just like my grandpa, just like his first name. I was thinking about that this morning: the T, right? The T really can stand for a lot. I think that one of the most important things it should stand for, which I'm actually going to the office to add to the book today, is talking, because it's action. Telling is the word. Telling is an action, and you have to take action. No matter how you want to tell the great story, you have to take action on it.That's the unfortunate thing that didn't happen with my grandpa Tom's life: no one took action on the words that he said and the stories that he said. He took the action to tell the stories. He never took the action to write them down or put them into a book or save what he was saying or, I guess, document what he was doing, and that piece of it, I think, is very important: we get better, and even at the beginning, just to show the progress, right? To say, "Here's where I was ...
