In part one of a two part episode, Rory and Greg interview Al Brown, from the Los Angeles based band Dangers. In addition to being the vocalist in a hardcore band, Al is a college professor, writer, small business owner, soccer coach, and fitness trainer; a true Renaissance Man who the physical and intellectual aspects of punk rock into a program of person growth.

Al discusses his introduction to hardcore punk through bands like as Nirvana and Offspring, the important relationship he shares with his family, and the music and lyrics of Dangers.

We spend considerable time talking education, from Al's experience growing up in hometown of punk legends Pennywise and Black Flag, to attending colleges on both coasts, his first job working in education as a one-on-one aid for special needs kids, to his role as a professor, writer, and amateur photographer. Al expounds the relationship between education and punk rock and those things are more similar than they might seem on the surface.

Our co-hosts also ask Al about how he grew his small business, Gate 14, from a group of friends and fitness enthusiasts into a viable gym. Rory and Al share their insights as small business owners who manage change and keep their respective business endeavors viable in a rapidly changing cultural landscape.

Greg and Rory welcome long time listener, first time caller Rob Antonucci to the show. Rob is a regular behind the scenes collaborator with Common Thread, and today he joins us on the mic for what will be a two part episode.

The trio share updates related to the podcast and life. Rory discusses the recent tenth anniversary of Ugly Duck Coffee and some of the festivities they coordinated in recognition of the milestone including a magician for the kids, and (real) tattoos for the adults applied by tattoo artist Benton Sillick from Lucky Folk Tattoo. Rory reflects on the early years of the coffee shop, the work that went into building the business, and efforts by everyone on the UDC team to develop the shop into what it is today.

Greg announces an upcoming author visit, reading, and book signing he is coordinating at the Irondequoit Public Library featuring our guests from episode 4 of Common Thread. On Saturday, August 30th the authors of The Unraveling (Karl Buechner, Jeremy Mueller, and Keith Ward) will be in town for an after hours event that will feature food from Red Fern, drinks from Ugly Duck Coffee, and (temporary) tattoos for the kids applied by tattoo artist Adrien Clark from Axe of Kindness. In the final installment of episode five Rory and Greg interview Tom Schlatter of Saetia, You & I, SpiritKiller, and The Assistant.

Rory starts things off by discussing the impact You & I had on his relationship with hardcore with a particular focus on his experience traveling to see their final show.

Tom talks about how punk rock influenced his career trajectory in the IT field, eventually leading him to seek meaningful work by managing technology in the public library setting. Greg and Tom discuss their experiences working in public libraries, how the current social and political climate is impacting libraries, and how punk rock and early 2000's message board culture prepared them for the 2020's culture wars.

Rory and Tom spend time discussing how they met through Alone Records, the record label their previous bands Standfast and The Assistant were affiliated with. The discussion includes how hardcore informed their response to trauma and setbacks in life.

The three also talk about the changing demographics within hardcore punk, growing older and aging in the a vegan/punk/hardcore community, and the cyclical nature of the rise and fall of popularity in sub-genres of hardcore punk. Tom discusses how the Saetia reunion shows have helped raise funds for various nonprofit organizations. Charles Cure from SpiritKiller also makes a cameo appearance in this episode.
