Comedian Jamel Johnson enters the Hometown Blues Institute of Football Psychology carrying decades of Washington football trauma—and one increasingly complicated relationship with Jayden Daniels.

A lifelong Washington fan who grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia, Jamel has survived the Redskins years, the Washington Football Team era, the arrival of the Commanders, Dan Snyder, FedEx Field, collapsing expectations, questionable plumbing, countless quarterbacks and enough organizational dysfunction to make emotional stability feel suspicious.

Then 2024 happened.

Jayden Daniels arrived. Washington went 12–5. The Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game. And for the first time in years, Jamel allowed himself to believe.

His words: “It fucked me up.”

Now the question isn't whether Washington can win. It's whether Jamel can survive caring this much again.

A.M. Pfeffer sits down with Jamel to talk about growing up in Virginia, becoming a comedian, his relationship with Washington football and what happens when a fan who spent years distancing himself from hope suddenly gets handed a franchise quarterback.

Then it's time to open the Institute.

Jamel undergoes three clinical assessments:

THE SNYDER REFLEX TEST
Can a Washington fan look at a yacht, a congressional hearing room, a FedEx envelope, a functioning stadium railing and working plumbing without experiencing traumatic football memories?

THE WASHINGTON FOOTBALL IDENTITY TEST
Redskins. Washington Football Team. Commanders. Three names. Allegedly one football team. The Institute attempts to determine which one Jamel actually believes he has been rooting for his entire life.

THE TRUST FALL
Jamel is handed Jayden Daniels and asked a simple question: How close is he actually willing to move his franchise quarterback toward the edge?

The results lead A.M. to an official diagnosis:

DSM 1.08 — QUARTERBACK RELATIONSHIP DISORDER (QRD)

A condition in which a fan is no longer evaluating a quarterback.

They're in a relationship with one.

Every throw carries interpersonal meaning. An interception feels disrespectful. A fourth-quarter comeback becomes an apology. One good press conference and suddenly you're telling your friends, “He's really matured.”

Treatment is available.

Couples therapy, unfortunately, requires both parties.

The quarterback will not be attending.

Welcome to Hometown Blues, where every NFL fan thinks their team is the problem. We're here to determine what it's done to you.
