Detroit’s rookie squad stunned the Columbus Blue Jackets with a last-minute overtime win, thanks to Justice Christensen’s heroics—his second goal of the game sealing the 3-2 victory. After tying things up with just one minute left in regulation, the young Red Wings showed grit and resilience, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the third period. Christensen, on an AHL contract, stood out with his strong shot and all-around play, earning high praise from coaches as they watch his potential transition to pro hockey. The team finished the tournament 2-1, having also defeated Dallas in a shootout and narrowly lost to Pittsburgh. Trey Augustine made 21 saves in the win. With the rookie tournament now over, attention turns to main training camp starting Thursday—offering a glimpse into the future of Red Wings’ roster.

Adam Fantilli’s contract stalemate is heating up as August ticks on — with the Blue Jackets holding over $13M in cap space but unlikely to offer him a deal that eats into their future flexibility. His agent is actively negotiating, and Fantilli, after two stellar seasons, clearly wants to be paid. The team sees him as their cornerstone center and knows they must find a middle ground — possibly by moving assets like Zach Werenski before his contract expires. Expect a resolution within weeks, likely for less than the full cap figure — balancing today’s needs with tomorrow’s star.

The Columbus Blue Jackets just made a big move in net, signing veteran goalie Cam Talbot to a one-year, $950K deal for the 2026-27 season. With 13 NHL seasons under his belt, including stints with the Rangers, Oilers, and Red Wings, Talbot brings proven playoff-caliber experience, two All-Star nods, and even a Vezina Trophy finalist nod in 2016-17 — when he led the league in wins. Known for his smart play, size, and leadership, Talbot is exactly the depth and reliability the Jackets need as they continue building a more stable goaltending corps.
