Cale Makar just locked in a jaw-dropping six-year, $10M+ deal with the Colorado Avalanche — a move that confirms his status as the league’s elite defenseman, but also signals a brutal cap crunch. With MacKinnon and Necas already eating up most of the salary ceiling, the Avalanche are now forced to play chess with their roster, risking depth and flexibility. Fans wonder if this mega-contract marks the peak — or the beginning of the end — for Colorado’s championship window, as they’ll soon face tough decisions about who to let go to stay competitive.

Martin Necas is exploding onto the NHL scene with a career-high 100 points this season—38 goals, 62 assists in 78 games—putting him among elite company. Already ranked 31 by TSN (ahead of Igor Shesterkin) and named to NHL Network’s top 50, his breakout year is fueled by electric chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon, who together amassed 227 points and led the league in scoring. Necas also set a personal best with 31 multi-point games and delivered clutch playoff performances, including an OT winner against the Wild. Signed to an eight-year extension in October 2025 from Carolina via the Mikko Rantanen trade, the Avalanche are reaping massive rewards from their bold move.

Alex Newhook just locked in his future with the Montreal Canadiens on a four-year, $22.2M extension that keeps him in the city until he’s 29 — a bold statement of faith from the team after his breakout playoff run last spring, where he led the club with seven goals in 19 games en route to the Eastern Conference Final. Acquired from Colorado in June 2023 in a package involving draft picks and a defenseman, Newhook struggled to cement his role in Colorado post-Cup but has flashed elite offensive potential in Montreal despite injuries and positional shifts. Now, with the Canadiens building around young talent, this deal signals they see him as a cornerstone of their long-term success.

The Colorado Avalanche’s upcoming season hides some electrifying under-the-radar storylines: veteran defenseman Brent Burns, at 41 and chasing a historic record, may strategically sit out games to focus on deep playoff runs; the fourth-line center spot is wide open with contenders like Fedor Svechkov, Parker Kelly, and Nic Roy vying for trust; and rookie goalie Ilya Nabokov, eager for NHL ice time, could force his way into the rotation — or be sidelined — depending on how quickly he develops and how injuries shape the roster. These quiet narratives might just be the key to their success.

The Colorado Avalanche just unveiled their 2026-27 training camp roster — 29 forwards, 20 defensemen, and 7 goalies — as the league races under a new CBA that’s shrinking every timeline. Media day, on-ice practices, and preseason games are all crammed into a frantic schedule, with opening night just 13 days away and veteran players limited to just two exhibition games. This compressed pace is a major shift — and it’ll be fascinating to see how the team adapts to game speed without the usual tune-up cushion.

The man who built the 2022 Cup-winning team is now deep in offseason moves, locking down Cale Makar with a record-setting $163M deal and adding Jaden Schwartz for three years.
