In this episode of Rueff Around The Edges, Josh sits down with Colonel Mike Barton to talk about a military career spanning more than 30 years.
Mike shares how the events of September 11, 2001 changed the direction of his life, ultimately leading him away from plans for a career in agriculture and toward continued service in the Army. He takes us inside his deployments to Iraq, from running dangerous convoy missions and encountering enemy fire and IEDs to the day an explosion left him wounded north of Baghdad.
Mike also talks about the journey from enlisted Soldier and Staff Sergeant to commissioned officer, returning to command the same company where he began as a Private, and eventually rising to the rank of Colonel.
Along the way, the conversation explores leadership, family, sacrifice, the bonds formed through military service, and the lessons learned over three decades in uniform. Mike also offers his perspective on how warfare is changing and the growing role of drones and technology on the modern battlefield.
