Are college quarterbacks actually getting better—or are we just getting better at HYPING them?
This week on The Sad Fan, Frye tackles what he believes is becoming one of college football's biggest problems: the inflation of the quarterback position.
Bryce Underwood. Arch Manning. John Mateer. Dante Moore.
We're surrounded by highly rated, highly publicized—and now highly PAID—young quarterbacks.
But are we evaluating what they're actually doing on the field, or falling in love with athleticism and potential?
Frye breaks down Bryce Underwood and Michigan's 17–10 win over Oklahoma, including the Wolverines' impressive defense and the continued questions surrounding their passing attack.
Then there's Arch Manning, who gave us the perfect example of why quarterback evaluation is so complicated. Texas trailed No. 1 Ohio State 23–3 entering the fourth quarter before Manning helped lead the Longhorns to an incredible 24–23 comeback victory.
Was that the emergence of the quarterback everyone has been waiting for?
Or does it show why we need to give young quarterbacks time to develop before declaring them either superstars OR busts?
Meanwhile, Oklahoma State stunned No. 6 Oregon 39–31, with the Cowboys piling up 554 yards against an Oregon team many expected to compete for a national championship.
Frye also questions whether modern college offenses are actually developing quarterbacks. Bubble screens and simplified reads can generate impressive completion percentages, but are they preparing quarterbacks to read defenses, work through progressions, and make NFL-level throws?
Then there's the money.
NIL has completely changed expectations.
When a young quarterback receives a massive NIL valuation, fans don't see a developing college kid anymore.
They see an investment.
And investments are expected to produce.
But is that fair?
Then we turn to the NFL, where Week 1 finally gives us something we've been waiting months for:
Real football.
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills face C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans in one of the biggest games of opening weekend.
Stroud enters a crucial season with questions surrounding his development, while Houston's defense gives the Texans legitimate championship aspirations.
We also get into Tua Tagovailoa, Myles Garrett, player health, coaching decisions, injuries, and some of the matchups we're watching as the NFL season begins.
College quarterbacks are getting more money.
More attention.
More hype.
And more pressure than ever.
But eventually, none of that matters.
You still have to play quarterback.
Welcome back to The Sad Fan.
