In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, we’re talking about the ripple effect—how federal policies and decisions can make their way down to local communities, families, businesses, workers, and people who rely on public programs.

DVJ breaks down several issues discussed in the episode, including Head Start funding and changes, SNAP and FoodShare, Medicaid and health funding, Milwaukee Job Corps, tariffs and their potential impact on Wisconsin businesses and consumers, and increased immigration enforcement in Wisconsin.

This episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle goes from serious headlines to everyday life—and, as always, we’re talking about it exactly how we see it.

We start with a discussion about immigration and the controversy surrounding the treatment of white South African refugees compared with people from other African countries. From there, we get into a much bigger conversation about race, government policies, stereotypes, and how laws and the people enforcing them can affect people's lives.

Then we take a hard look at gun laws and accountability following a Minnesota mass shooting. We discuss how gun permits are reviewed, the warning signs and previous legal history surrounding the suspect, and the questions being raised about whether different decisions could have prevented the tragedy. We also talk about an ICE officer arrested for suspected drunk driving, including the body-camera footage, her request for special consideration because she was a federal officer, and the questions surrounding why she remained on the job while her case continued. And because this is Cold World, we don't stay serious the entire time. There's Packers talk, getting ready for work, taking care of Chewy, broken elevators, trying to put air in the tires, and plenty of those everyday situations that somehow turn into a whole conversation about people and the way we move through the world.

In this episode of Cold World w/ DVJ & Michelle, the conversation gets real—and there’s definitely no filter.

DVJ and Michelle talk about race, identity, criticism, privilege, and the double standards they believe people experience when discussing different communities. The conversation moves into Israel and Palestine, the phrase “Free Palestine,” the distinction between criticizing a government and criticizing an entire group of people, and the human cost of conflict. They also get into immigration and the different ways people can be perceived based on race, appearance, language, and where others assume they come from. The discussion questions why some immigrants seem to face more scrutiny than others—and why businesses that rely on immigrant labor often remain part of everyday American life. The conversation then turns to incarceration, punishment, and whether people who are quick to say “lock them up” really understand what life inside segregation or solitary confinement can be like.

And of course, Cold World wouldn't be Cold World without the unexpected detours—including Chewy's dinner, lima beans, green beans, everyday life, and everything else that somehow makes its way into the conversation. 😂
