  • Episode 26 - Paul Folan
    2025/08/05

In this episode, Sam’s guest is Paul Folan. After 20 years of working for a major UK high street retail bank, Paul jumped ship to retrain as a group fitness instructor, personal trainer, sports therapist, sports nutritionist...and other things! Specialising in Phase IV cardiac rehab and special populations, Paul developed his businesses, opening his own Personal Training studios with his then business partner. After 17 years together, Paul now has his own Personal Training gym, continues to run group exercise classes and personal training sessions online and uses his NLP skills to continue to support his clients both inside and outside of their training sessions.

Paul’s falling story is different from many previous guests as the ‘failure’ is not caused because he is doing anything wrong. In fact, he is doing everything right, to the letter. Paul beautifully articulates the difference between doing the thing right and doing the right thing – they can often be very different things. What we do with people is not the same as how we be with them and both are important for a coaching relationship to be successful.

In his flowing story, Paul reminds us of the power of an apology. He shares how a heartfelt apology demonstrated that he heard the other person which immediately took the heat out of a situation and enabled the relationship to continue and build.
