  • Podcast #21 : FRANZ SCHREKER: an old-fashioned modernist
    2026/07/17

In this episode, Jens & Joe tackle Franz Schreker, the missing link between Schoenberg and Zemlinsky — and a composer of wildly Freudian fairy‑tale operas that were all the rage between the wars. Deemed too modern in his time, and shocking in Vienna — but loved for both — Schreker was one of the most widely performed opera composers before World War II, alongside Richard Strauss and Walter Braunfels. Yet the curse of the Nazis and the subsequent shunting of much of the late‑Romantic repertoire saw him largely forgotten, despite occasional revivals and resuscitation efforts.

  • Podcast #20 : JOHANN STRAUSS II and his Contemporaries
    2026/07/10
If you wanted to dance with somebody in 19th‑century Vienna, Johann Strauss was your best bet for the soundtrack. But he wasn’t alone: a whole galaxy of composers cranked out waltzes, polkas, and operettas — the “light music” the city consumed at a breakneck pace. In this episode, Jens and Joe explore some of these figures, trace the history of the genre, and even spin off to Copenhagen by way of twirling musical entertainment.0:22   Introduction1:10   Happy Birthday, Johann Strauss4:52   Franz von Suppè vs. Jacques Offenbach8:22   Franz von Suppè: The Beautiful Galatea10:44   Jacques Offenbach: La Belle Hélène12:58  Political Operetta Couplets14:22  Carl Michael Ziehrer: Leopoldine16:09  Carl Michael Ziehrer: The Vagabonds18:45  Johann Strauss featuring Wagner20:42  Josef Hellmesberger (Jr.): Danse Diabolique22:24  Hans Christian Lumbye – “The Danish Strauss”24:23  Carl Millöcker: Gasparone26:36  Oscar Straus: The Merry Nibelungs29:29  ConclusionC60134  Franz von Suppè: The Beautiful GalateaDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C60134!PodcastC49304  Offenbach FestivalDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C49304!PodcastC7147  Ziehrer Operetta FestivalDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C7147!PodcastC10835  Kowalski – Operetta GalaDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C10835!PodcastC10848  Marienbader ElegienDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C10848!PodcastC10752  Oscar Straus: The Merry NibelungsDiscover now: https://Naxos.lnk.to/C10752!PodcastJochen Kowalski — https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/Jochen_Kowalski/7105Ulrike Steinsky — https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/Ulrike_Steinsky/83056Pinchas Steinberg — https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/Pinchas_Steinberg/31876Bruno Weil — https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/Bruno_Weil/31990János Sándor — https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/J%C3%A1nos_S%C3%A1ndor/32413WDR Rundfunkorchester Köln — https://www1.wdr.de/orchester-und-chor/funkhausorchester/index.htmlCappella Coloniensis — https://www.naxos.com/CatalogueDetail/?id=C49382Münchner Rundfunkorchester — https://www.rundfunkorchester.de/Johann Strauss II - Josef Strauss - Eduard Strauss - Carl Michael Ziehrer - Jacques Offenbach - Franz von Suppè - Carl Millöcker - Oscar Straus - Josef Hellmesberger - Richard WagnerWith:Jens F. • Podcast #19 : ALEXANDER ZEMLINSKY - The Opera Composer
    2026/07/03
Once upon a time, there was a tiny little man in Vienna who composed the grandest operas. What started out as fairy‑tale works of musical theatre ended, alas, in tragic fashion for Alexander Zemlinsky in the New World. In this episode, Joe and Jens track this wildly underrated composer’s operatic career from Vienna via Prague and Berlin to his premature death in New York.0:20   Introduction1:16   Late Zemlinsky Revival3:14   Alma Mahler and The Dwarf5:12   Once Upon a Time (1900)9:32   Der Traumgörge (1905/06)13:11  A Florentine Tragedy (1916)17:01  The Dwarf (1922)17:31   The Berlin Era18:57   The Chalk Circle (1932/33)22:04  Immigration23:14  Schoenberg and Zemlinsky26:25  King Candaules (1936)28:18  Back to Vienna29:00  ConclusionC60019  Once Upon a TimeDiscover: https://naxos.lnk.to/C600192!PodcastC10241-42  Der TraumgörgeDiscover: https://naxos.lnk.to/C1024142!PodcastC5325  A Florentine TragedyDiscover: https://naxos.lnk.to/C5325!PodcastC60016-2  The Chalk CircleDiscover: https://naxos.lnk.to/C600162!PodcastC60071  King CandaulesDiscover: https://naxos.lnk.to/C600712!PodcastRenate Behle — https://www.renatebehle.de/Wolfgang KochJosef ProtschkaEva Johansson — http://www.evajohansson.dk/Pamela Coburn — https://www.pamcoburn.com/Bertrand de Billy — https://debilly.com/Gerd Albrecht — http://www.gerd-albrecht.com/Stefan Soltesz — https://www.hilbert.de/en/artists/conductor/stefan-soltesz/Radio‑Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt — https://www.orchester-des-wandels.de/en/our-orchestras/musicians-of-the-hr-sinfonieorchester-frankfurt/Rundfunk‑Sinfonieorchester Berlin — https://www.rsb-online.de/en/ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra — https://rso.orf.at/Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg — https://www.die-hamburgische-staatsoper.de/en/people/1929-philharmonisches-staatsorchester-hamburgAlma Mahler‑Werfel - Gustav Mahler - Arnold Schoenberg - Franz Schreker - KlabundWith:Jens F.
