Amarius Mims delivered a dominant season opener, shutting down the Buccaneers’ relentless blitz with zero pressures or sacks while holding his own against rookie phenom Rueben Bain Jr. His career-high pass-blocking grade of 85.4 signals serious growth, and he’s already being eyed as a breakout candidate. Mims stays humble, focusing on protecting Joe Burrow and winning games over personal accolades, while pushing coaches for more athletic opportunities. Up next: a brutal test against Houston’s elite pass rushers — a chance to keep improving, not just impressing.

Shohei Ohtani sits out again for the Dodgers against the Reds, despite returning just yesterday after a four-game absence — a surprise move as he’s not quite 100% with arm and knee issues. Manager Dave Roberts says they’re easing him back in slowly, possibly using him off the bench tonight, with a return to the starting lineup expected tomorrow. Ohtani, speaking for the first time in three weeks, admits he’s still working through physical hiccups and is focused on playing through the rest of the season, even as his recent hitting slump continues.

Republicans are weaponizing the term “socialism” in the midterm race, painting Democrats as radical after polls show strong Democratic support for socialist ideas — especially in Kentucky, where DSA-linked wins are being used to fuel GOP attacks. But Democrats push back, calling it a distraction from GOP failures like economic instability and soaring costs. Candidates like Charles Booker reject the label, insisting their policies — like universal healthcare and fair wages — aren’t socialism but common-sense solutions. Even Governor Beshear admits voters crave bold change, even if he’s wary of the term. Meanwhile, democratic socialists say they’re gaining traction, with stigma at an all-time low — seen as a threat by those clinging to the status quo. The debate is national: a House resolution condemning socialism passed, though not without dissent, as Republicans use it to target Democrats who’ve moved beyond traditional party lines — including those who’ve fled communist regimes.

Lebanon City Council shut down all 20 Flock Safety license plate cameras after months of silence from the vendor, despite no complaints about police use. Mayor Mark Messer cited a lack of transparency — the city sent 54 questions on August 17th and got zero replies — as the core issue, stressing public trust can’t survive unanswered questions. Concerns over outside access lingered even with police assurances of strict controls. The move wasn’t about policing, but about accountability: the mayor trusted officers, not the company. Cameras are offline as of Wednesday, September 9th, with residents urging future caution before adopting similar tech.

A 38-year-old man with two pistols and a taser lunged at Ohio gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair, knocking over two elderly people and causing injuries — though he never got close to her or used any weapons. Though legally armed, he’s charged with assault and inducing panic, pleaded not guilty, and is barred from contacting Acton or victims, surrendering his guns, and speaking to media. His brother, Andrew Havas — a Republican county leader with prior legal issues and ties to campaigns Acton criticized — adds political intrigue to the case.

Covington commissioners voted 4 to 1 to scrap automatic license plate readers from a new police tech contract, responding to strong community concerns over privacy and surveillance. While the deal included body cams, Tasers, and AI tools for body cam analysis, the ALPRs sparked heated debate — with police citing a key murder case solved using the tech. But residents pushed back, echoing nationwide trends in cities like Hamilton County and Oxford, Ohio, that have paused or canceled similar systems. The amended Axon contract, ending September 30, now excludes ALPRs, signaling a cautious shift toward public safety tech that prioritizes community input.
