In Athens, Paul is greatly distressed to see all of the idol worship. The enemy still uses idol worship today to keep many from believing in Jesus, but he also uses idols to keep believers from experiencing Life in the Spirit. He lures us to fall for the counterfeit life found in the idols of pleasure, money, sex, politics, religion, fame, and success; but idols always fall short of delivering what they promise. Abundant life, satisfaction, and true fulfillment can only be found in Jesus!

Well, the Bereans in Acts 17, receive the gospel message from Paul with eagerness and examined the Scriptures to see if it was true. As a result, they saw that it was in fact true, put their faith in Jesus for salvation, and their lives were changed forever. As we live Life in the Spirit today, He will also lead us to receive new truths with eagerness and also examine the Scriptures as He reveals truth to us and how it applies to our lives.

In Acts 15, we see the gospel of grace come under fire as some try to claim that circumcision and keeping the law of Moses are requirements for salvation. However, the church at Jerusalem affirms that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. The "Jesus plus" gospel is still alive today, and we must guard against the drift towards self-justification.
